Trying to escape the blazing, fucking heat, my friends and I caught a movie at the Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark) yesterday. After the credits started rolling and our sweat had finally dried, we mosied over to Thatcher’s (7906 SE Stark) and began our Sunday afternoon drinking. Jason played a game of Keno and Eric and I sat back to drink. The place is awesome—not only does it have a patio, it also has pool tables and the most rockin’ elderly clientele. Our server was super nice and she was ecstatic to tell Jason that he won $140 on his Keno ticket. Drinks were on him. So we spent a half hour checking out the other customers’ fashions. We got a huge kick out of one portly man who was wearing a skin-tight bike jersey that was unzipped to his navel. He was even rockin’ some cleavage. There were two twentysomething girls wearing short ruffly skirts playing pool with their grandma, and she didn’t seem to care that they were flashing their asses everytime they made a shot.
But the highlight was… BINGO! Yep, they have free bingo at 5 pm every Sunday. The bingomaster was a genius emcee, encouraging us to bash the headlights of an SUV that had left its lights on outside. He was also really happy whenever he got to announce O-69 (but lamenting that it was too hot to even think about sex). The crowd was really getting into it after the fourth game and the bingomaster was telling us that sometimes he gets death threats if he doesn’t call the right number.
The prizes were foodstuffs. I won a rump roast (which I gave to an elderly lady who was pretty stoked) and a marionberry cake. Could you ask for anything more? I’m definitely going back next Sunday, but next time I’ll bring Zulu, my lucky troll doll.
