Last week, Jonathan Maus at BikePortland.org reported that Jammin 95.5’s morning show, The Playhouse, spent some airtime on Thursday bashing cyclists.
From BikePortland.org:
[T]he female host told a story about a friend who had recently hit a cyclist with her car while driving downtown. The cyclist was sent to the hospital. Lanette [a listener and cyclist who alerted BikePortland.org] thought the host would be saddened by this news, but instead she says that “the male host was elated.” Here’s more from Lanette:“He then encouraged listeners to call in and tell more stories of cyclist who had been smashed by cars because the thought of it really pumped him up.
The female host then told a story of how the other day she had intentionally cut a cyclist off and the cyclist punched her rear window. She said, “Now I carry extra water bottles in my car to throw at them.”
Cyclists called the station to complain, and The Playhouse’s main host, P.K., responded to Maus on Friday:
P.K. contends that his comments were taken out of context and that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions until we’ve heard the broadcast.
Maus also posted P.K.’s version of what was said on air. Problem is, the station hasn’t posted a podcast of Thursday’s show (as they have with others), so people can listen for themselves.
Then today, The Playhouse apparently spent time chatting on-air about the cyclists’ response to their original show. Maus has posted a new entry on his site, welcoming Playhouse listeners, and warning that he won’t tolerate any anti-cyclist comments. So far, everyone’s playing nice. UPDATE: The debate over there is fiesty at the moment. “You guys need to quit your whining when drivers make fun of running you over,” a guy named Dean is arguing.
Meanwhile, over on The Playhouse’s site, their listeners are sending in acerbic comments like:
Hi PK, I wanted to comment on your ‘Bikers Suck’ topic from Friday and today. I just wanted to say that I hate those same bikers, the ones that have absolutely no street smarts or regards for others. I’ll bet half or more of those bikers are people that had DUI’s and can’t drive cars, therefore leaving them bitter and hateful toward people with drivers licenses.
For reasons I'm too embarassed to admit, my alarm clock is set to the Playhouse and I actually woke up listening to that broadcast. Right before I had to get on my bike to commute to work. Because it is my primary, and frequently sole, form of transportation and has been for 5 years. Take home message from what I heard: Better to kill the cyclist when you hit them so you don't have to sue them to cover the expenses for the damages to your car.
Yeah, it was that bad. I'm not surprised at all that the station hasn't released the transcript.
I'm surprised more people haven't commented on this. people: that cyclist could be your boyfriend or sister or something. gawdamn
meesa saya "nosuh"
Meesa change-ah me mind-o! Meesa saya "yesuh" BEEP BEEP!
I effin hate that Playhouse. Dumb as fuck.
ooohhh wwwwaa wwwwaaaa im so offended !!!! some people dont care about cyclists oohh I better piss and moan about it. Shut your hole just keep biking to work, dont whine, just keep riding.
It appears retards like the above person will manage to find every place on the net to post their crap.
I recorded the comments on Monday the 17th and am organizing a bicycle picnic in Grants Park on the 22 to coincide with Jammin 95.5 event. Since Friday I have repeatedly contacted Tim McNamara the General Manager ( 503-243-7595, extension 216 ) to try to offer suggestions to work with the bicycle community to solve this issue. Instead he still refuse to make the tape of the 13th available.
Please take a few minuets to listen to the sound bites on the following site:
Oh excellent! It is our two good months of summer so instead of having a GOOD TIME, lets keep the bike/car fight raging with a PROTEST! Fuck this place!!!!!!!
PK is a redneck douchbag too dumb to realize that he is on his way down... That is, if someone doesn`t whack him first.
Too bad someone didn't have a digital recording of this somewhere and upload it to google or You Tube with a montage of stills.... ;)
