I somehow got subscribed to one of those health nut email lists that sends out a tip every day, like how you should eat gobs of sunflower seeds and that cherry juice relieves sore muscles. The last one I got gave me an update of how much time passes before various benefits of quitting smoking kick in. I am in between the period of time when you are supposed to be less vulnerable to colds but have to hold out for the wrinkles I supposedly have from smoking (honestly, it was only for, like, 12 years?!) to be comepletely invisible. Anyhow, then I bopped over to one of my favorite blogs, The Sartorialist, and saw this:

The Sart was sort of apologetic about showing a smoker’s picture, and insisted he’s been attracted to the subject because of his hair, not the cig. I’ve always thought smoking looked pretty cool. I mean, anyone who tells you there’s a different reason for why they ever started is almost positively lying. I kind of like the beautiful face pictured with something that works against beauty, capturing a fleeting moment of youthful… what they like to refer to as “rebellion.” A very casual dance with premature aging, if not death. More sexy smokers after the break.

cigarettes do make people look damn good.
There is nothing cool about smoking. Holding a cigarette in your mouth is basically saying "I'm an idiot." The vast majority of people start smoking in high school or shortly after, because of peer pressure, at an age when dumb things like puffing on carcinogenic smoke and stinking all the time somehow seem rebellious. "I'll show my parents... I'm going to ruin my health and my clothes will be a stinking mess at the dinner table." Then they continue even years after deciding it's a really dumb habit because they're addicted.
There's not much that's rebellious about smoking either. Nearly every cigarette ever sold makes profit for huge corporations. Far more rebellious wouldl be to actually be an unconventional person: to ride a bike for transportation when all your friends drive, or to stand up against police brutality when no one else you know is politically engaged.
Yeah but Brian if you do all that stuff, you're BORING.
It was the opposite when I was in high school. Your parents smoked, and because they did, smoking was uncool.
(And for every Audrey Hepburn pic, there are tons of street people smoking that'll turn you off it right quick...)

That cigarette looks delicious! Maybe Scott or Brad will give me another one before I chew my hands off...
