Goddamnit if 2007 isn’t starting out beautifully. Just a few days in and we get this one dropped on us: the Children of the Revolution festival, going down Saturday, January 6 at AudioCinema (226 SE Madison). I talked to one of the organizers, Kevin Darouian.

MERCURY: First off, what does the name, Children of the Revolution, mean?

KEVIN DAROUIAN: Well, it is a T-Rex song. To me the song captured a time period where people believed that music, art, crafts, and culture could help change the world for the better—through the means of inspiration, unity, and expression. This event is a good example that everyone benefits from supporting one another and the results can satisfy that need for belonging while still retaining each person’s individuality.

What went into choosing the bands for this year's lineup?

We started discussing the band lineup nine months ahead of time. There was a large list of bands we wanted to play the show and we took the people [that were] the most excited about the idea and were able to play. The goal in the end was to make the lineup a good representation of what is pushing Portland music culture. Not everyone is from Portland but there are definitely some bands out there that play Portland as if it were home. The same pretty much goes for the artists involved.

What's the deal with the art side of the fest?

We tried to get a good spectrum of talent. We have some artists which are internationally renowned and established, then we have others who are on the cusp of some very great things. While building the roster I particularly sought out artists that have worked within music. The reason for this is that both visual art and music have been influencing each other since the creation of both. This event sort of emphasizes how that is so.

How will the art side of it be laid out? Like a traditional gallery hanging?

It's the standard gallery set up.

Why did you guys decide to go with Audio Cinema?

Originally we decided to have the event at an old cash register factory but then it flooded. The event was pretty much in shambles. After checking out a few options Audio Cinema seemed like the place for the event. Plus the people that run the place have been really supportive and great to work with.

It's a pretty huge and diverse space. In which ways are you guys going to use it?

The main space is divided in to sections. 2/3rds of it will be gallery space. We are allowing a good amount of the space to accommodate for the live performances. We will have a side stage near the bar set up which will be provided by Tube. There is also a really awesome room covered in Astroturf that will have merch tables and such.
