Remember when Jack Bogdanski blocked the Mercury from his blog, bojack.org? He’s lucky our panties don’t get scrunched up that tightly—probably because we wear these really awesome hipster ones from a yuppie store that’s ruining Portland—or he’d have one less thing to write about.
Wednesday, January 10, 2007 I scare myself sometimesAround three years ago, I wrote:
Heaven forbid we should have enough cops when we can have streetcars.Wait ‘til we start paying the operating subsidy for the OHSU aerial tram (which will shuttle folks to and from yet another Homer Williams development). At that point, the East Precinct may have to close.
I was kidding. But it turns out, I was right — almost dead-on right. Just as the tram comes on line, at a staggering operating cost, the city’s now talking about closing a police precinct (it turns out to be the North) due to budget problems.
Folks, the inmates have officially taken over this asylum.

You’re welcome, Jack.
P.S. — I wasn't the only one to note the, um, irony of Jack's post. A screenshot, because who knows how long until Jack plays nanny.

UPDATE: Yep, Jack pulled that comment. Then this one appeared...

"I scare myself sometimes."
My ability to see the future is astounding. My extrasensory perception catapults me to a new species, above you humans. Having mastered the nooks and crannies of terrestrial intelligence, I am working on omniscient.
Whew, I've been blogging for six days. Time for a rest.
A bigger factor in the police budget than the tram (which probably affects transportation budgets a lot more than police?) would have to be the millions lost to lawsuits when cops bust heads on peaceful protesters. Keeping officers on the force who pepper-spray babies, attack people merely standing on a public sidewalk, that sort of thing, would have to be one of their biggest budget liabilities.
I posted a comment over there that looks at the city's crime data by neighborhood. IIRC your article said that East precinct would get the resources North precinct is currently getting. Well, North Portland's type I crime has fallen by 23% over the past 12 years. East Portland's type I crime has doubled. So to me, it makes sense that East Portland should get more police resources than North Portland. East Portland represents 27% of Portland's type I crime, whereas North Portland only represents 11%. East Portland's type I crime level is the only one to increase over the past 12 years, all other neighborhood clusters have fallen (1 stayed the same).
Interestingly, the "New Chinatown" area known as "Outer SE" has fallen the most - 63% drop in 12 years. Only SW Portland has fewer Type I crimes. The "felony flats" moniker increasingly applies to East Portland, not Outer SE any longer.
Morgan:
You're quite right to point out that East Portland has seen a growing need for more officers while the stats show the need in North Precinct has declined. It only makes sense to move 'em.
Regarding your statement about what many may find to be news about the decline in Type I crime in Outer SE-
please help us keep a lid on the fact that this is actually a decent place to live, everybody will want to move here.
I'm sorry Frank, my loyalty is to the data. Go commit some crime to get the numbers up! :P
Oh, and Jack also pulled Dan's comment too. I hope mine stays up, I was just talkin' numbers. He can't ban me for talkin' numbers! (I think)
Blowhardanski,
Sometimes you scare us, too.
Hard to believe that "the voice of the people" who rails against backroom deals and sham public process engages in his own version of spinmeistering. I guess if you are the smartest guy in the blogosphere, though, you give yourself a pass. I can't wait until Portland is run by ego-centric law profs with too much time on their hands. Then things will be better and the rest of us "kids" can get back to our music, fashion and porn.
There's porn?
According to Jack. Not that he has been known for hyperbole or anything. And as they say, the experience of users may vary.
Does Blowjard actually teach at Lewis & Clark? Where does he get all this free time?
Pity the poor law student who has to endure his megalomania.
I wonder what kind of car he drives.
Morgan,
Not only did he pull my comment, he wrote me an email warning me that if I wrote something like this again, he would "ban me from accessing his site entirely."
Here's what I wrote: >>Why do you delete comments from people who disagree with you? How can there be constructive dialogue if you selectively control the
dissemination of opinions? Aside from being authoritarian in nature, the
echochamber you create is far less interesting then if it was a democratic
dialogue.
It's not like the comment was confrontational or anything, it was just a simple observation. Nevertheless, I take this as proof that he has no interest whatsover in fostering a Portland dialogue, but rather only in surrounding himself in a narcissisticly centered electronic world of yes-men. For example, he also posted a blog about the tram yesterday. There are currently 79 comments on this thread, with precisely 79 Anti-tram comments and exactly ZERO pro-tram comments. That comes out to an astounding 100% agreement in his web-world. I wonder, which side he is on?
whenever he deletes my comments he sends me an email explaining why. for that i kinda like him. i always write him back, and he often responds.
he has this alluring jerk/not-jerkness about him that keeps me coming back for more.
OK... what kind of guy has enough free time (or the self-adoration) to look back at his extensive archives, just to find 'I told you so' affirmations?
It's not like he came up with some groundbreaking Nostradamus moment or something. You throw enough spaghetti (or shit) against the wall, eventually something will stick. Oh Jack, your generic city bashing is SO illuminating... thank you.
One time Bog sent us an email after we asked around for web host provider experiences...we were about to reply to thank him for the input--then remembered he'd not only blocked our email address, but stated flatly "do not email me again" in that "I'm being official now so I can nail you with it legally later" tone.
So Jack prevented us from saying "thank you." Irony.
No way people read this guy's blog. I REFUSE TO LIVE IN SUCH A WORLD.
He's already judge, jury and "heads must roll" executioner. I say, BoJack for Dictator of Portland!
Prompt there are programs of the help poor in the field of health protection? WBR LeoP
