Drunk Pi-rem: Third Best New Bar in U.S.

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Wed, Jan 3 at 11:48 AM

MSN City Guides has named Pi-rem (433 NW 4th) the #3 new bar of 2006. It beat out Seattle’s Havana (#6), but was bested by 230 Fifth, a rooftop NYC bar, and Bourbon & Branch, a reservations-only speakeasy in San Francisco.

MSN says:

Hipsters delve into Portland’s art and music scene at this gallery club in the heart of Old Town.

MSN’s City Search also named Portland’s top ten new bars in ‘06. Pi-rem topped the list, followed by:

“¢ SoLo 1300 NW Lovejoy
“¢ Vendetta 4306 N Williams
“¢ Moloko Plus 3967 N Mississippi
“¢ Tea Zone & Camellia Lounge 510 NW 11th
“¢ The Florida Room 435 N Killingsworth
“¢ Zaytoon 2236 NE Alberta
“¢ Vino Vixens 2929 SE Powell
“¢ Split Dine and Drink 7335 SW Bridgeport Rd (in Tigard! That one shouldn’t count.)
“¢ Thunder Ranch Saloon 13456 SE McLoughlin

they do?

Yeah, I dunno, I went the second weekend Pi-Rem was open and I was totally unimpressed. (Except the art by Madoko Ito, which I liked lots).

What about Rontoms?

Never even heard of this Pi-rem. Why do I have my doubts?

Moloko and Vendetta are both great.

Zaytoon has maybe the least attentive bartenders in Portland. Or at least on Alberta.

Florida Room rocks. A better Beulahland.

I'll give Romtom another chance, but I think it's too cavernous.

Did The Nest open in 2006 or 2005? Because I'd put them on the list.

I drink (and spend, apparently) too much.

I love Pi-Rem, but it does seem to get more publicity than I would've expected. It's a fantastic place, though... the bartenders/owners are cool, the art and music are typically great, and it's a great place to mingle with interesting folks. It's definitely a lot better than it was the second or third weekend, as far as people showing up. Glad to see it's taken off.

As far as I know, Pi-Rem is only open on the weekends. The service can be very bad, as the owners are the servers. They have zero beers on tap (though the bottle list is nice). And they are in a kinda bad neighborhood (one that I dislike walking through late at night). So how does this add up to best new bar? Beats me. I mean, it's not an awful place, but it's certainly not the best new place.

That humble award should go to a place like Concordia. A place that has knowledgable and great servers, a place that brings in not only unique beer, but brings the brewers in along with them.

Let's keep in mind that this is a City Search list. The people who voted don't know Jack.

Another new bar that I am digging lately is North 45, on NW 21st. Godd food, nice atmosphere and bartenders that can not only mix an excellent cocktail, but know their beer as well. Now if they would only put a Belgian on tap...

Really? The Camellia Lounge? From the pastel-colored decor to the fairly gross food, that place is like hanging out at my grandma's retirement home. (Well, I guess the home doesn't have fruity novelty drinks. But other than that? Exactly the same.)

Someday vs. Thunder Ranch or a bar in bridgeport village. sad face.

Pi-Rem? What kind of a lame-ass name is that? Yawn. Just another pretentious bar in P-Town. What else is new?

Will have to try Concordia, tho.

PI-Rem? WTF? The place is an F-ing condo basement in the Pearl with bad decor, bad acoustics and shitty service. It's not who you know it's who you blow apparently.

The reviewers above don't know shit. PI-REM has the best sound system in town, great decor & completely non-pretentious. What sucks is that this was a secret vibe place & now the secret is out. Now more of the morons that wrote the reviews above will flock in there.

IMHO Pi-rem has blown a breath of fresh air into the stale PDX bar/clubbing scene. Every experience there is amazingly unique & you can see the intent in every nook & corner of the space. I, for one, am pretty stoked that a PDX bar is regarded so highly nationwide, esp. one that operates by word of mouth, connects well with the community, doesn't fuck with the artists or the musicians & rejects most of the mainstream BS that plagues the pdx scene. Now you can continue dissing it or actually come by & experience it. Either way - this place is going to be totally stellar.
Just my 2 cents...

Pi-Rem? Not sure but I want to check it out. Binks is always a great place to hang. Zaytoon's staff rocks, did you go when Jimmy or Meagan were working? Florida Room is cool too.
