Misc The Most Disturbing Thing I’ve Ever Read

Posted by Scott Moore on Thu, Jan 4 at 12:28 PM

A Seattle couple has had their mentally disabled nine-year-old daughter undergo a series of medical procedures to keep her child-size for the rest of her life. They call her “Pillow Angel.”

I don’t think I can really sum up the coverage. Read it for yourself here and here.

“The God we know wants Ashley to have a good quality of life and wants her parents to be diligent about using every resource at their disposal (including the brains that He endowed them with) to maximize her quality of life,” her parents wrote on their blog.

Yeah, God’s really come through on this one.

I don't think I'm ready to roll out a damning criticism of this family's decision just yet. I read their statement and the history of their decision, and while it's certainly controversial, I can't help but believe they're doing the best thing for the little girl. She's obviously loved. One question you could ask yourself is whether the modifications are any worse than the suffering caused by being essentially a toddler in an adult's body. I think they did the right thing.

Yeah, geez, straight-up honestly, I'd want to find a way to get rid of it entirely. Permanantly three months old? What's the point of even keeping it alive?

The term "pillow angel" when referring to this thing creeps me out even more than the weird surgeries.

I'm making no moral judgments on what they're doing. Right or wrong, it's hella creepy.

I'm making a moral judgement right now: that is EVIL.

COOL! i want an ashley treatment, where do i sign up?

raising kids is hard. Tending to sick loved ones is even more difficult. I don't know how I would deal with a permanently 3 month old woman, unable to move, or even indicate discomfort.

Based upon Scott's initial comments, I was repulsed. I love my daughters and couldn't image doing anything to them to impede their growth, but after reading their words, and thinking about myself in their position, it became clear that her parents are thinking ahead, not just to their family's comfort and ability, but to hers as well.

I am reluctant to cast stones at her parents for doing what they believe to be correct, in this (fortunately) rarest of circumstances.

i have a brother in a similar state. he is now a grown man and his life would be much easier if he was smaller - back problems, hip problems, lungs crushing from osteoporosis, all from being tall but in the fetal position all day. it's not comfortable for him and it's not easy for those that care for him. i can only imagine the issues dealing with a woman with menstrual cycles and sexual assault (which is more common than anyone wants to admit). while i can understand people being weirded out about "pillow angels" trust me that there is value in his life and he finds happiness in his own way. i only hope the same is true for this woman.

I agree with No One In Particular. Why go to such lengths to keep something like that alive in the first place?

suze, ashley isn't like terry schiavo...she's not brain dead - she's just severely mentally retarded. there is a big difference. if she is anything like my brother, she can feel both sadness and joy. it's unfortunate that you don't think that she has the right to be kept alive when it's entirely within our means. i only hope you never have a disabled child, god help them.

Pillow Angel....Pillow Pants....

Removing this girl's uterus deprives her of her God-given right, and obligation, to bear children. She may not be able to think, but she can procreate.
