Looks like there’s a new bar opening on NE Broadway (near 27th)—Thatch, a tiki bar. It looks pretty cool from the outside—stuffed with bamboo, thatch, a sunken bar, and rescued items from the old Jasmine Tree. So what do you think? Too late to the game, or will Thatch be the new place to get your Mai Tai on?
From Humu Kon Tiki
Robert Volz has been working on his new tiki bar, Thatch, for a loooong time now, and it looks like the work is finally wrapping up. Robert reports that while Thatch will not be open in time for New Year’s Eve as he’d once hoped, he is now aiming to have a preview party for VIPs and Tiki Centralites on January 5. Those who are interested in attending can send Robert (AKA Robertiki) a personal message on Tiki Central to score an invite. No word yet on the grand opening date for the general public. Robert is pictured, along with a large black velvet painting for Thatch by Portland artists the Pander Bros.
Ditto.
Would the Jasmine Tree have ever made it to somebody's swanky top ten list?
Maybe not, but who cares?
A great place to have a drink, or three.
With salvaged items from the Tree, and the Pander Bros on velvet, Thatch may have a leg up on other watering holes.
If it doesn't try to be too trendy. JT succeeded by being a nice dark bar with few pretensions. And an awesome outrigger canoe.
Now if we want to have a drink after work we have to go to the Cheerfull Tortiose and drink with the students. (shudder)
Gossip has it that they may open as early as this weekend:
Orf, I couldn't agree with you more! I'm looking forward to Thatch, but I hope it stays as laidback as the JS did.

I miss the Jasmine Tree.
