Artsy What to do with Portland’s unloved dragon?

Posted by Matt Davis on Fri, Jan 12 at 9:00 AM

It’s now very unlikely that Chinatown’s controversial dragon sculpture at NW 3rd and Davis is going to stay where it is for much longer—the community, the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC), and even the artist himself want to move it—so whatever process has to be gotten out of the way, you can pretty much count it gone.dragongone.jpgUNLOVED: Dragon

“To remove something so quickly would be unique,” says Jeff Hawthorne, who is in charge of community involvement at the RACC.

But what should be done with the $22,000 sculpture? Who should it be given to? Should it be exploded with dynamite? I’m stumped. Perhaps, given its historic status as the quickest removed piece of public art in Portland, it should be consigned to a museum somewhere. Or a back yard. It’s up to the community…

Yeah, I say the back yard of some dude say like...... oh 82nd ish and foster? Said dude could "tinker" with it all night and could also serve as a toy that would probably take a while for his pitbulls to completely destroy.

Maybe move it to the zoo. Put it on a swivel like that ball-sack sculpture near Powell's... I would LOVE to see kids screaming in horror as that dragon-face rocks toward them.

We'll take it.

I was building a gazebo this spring/summer, and it would look AWESOME coming from the center of it. Of course, I would eliminate the ring it is currently being defecated through, but it would look cool, peering in through the ceiling.

I finally saw these pieces in person the other day. My first reaction was "They're so small" my second was "They're so poorly concieved".

THIS IS NOT ART!! A DISGRACE 2 EVERYONES PUBLIC SPACE!! I'M surpised Portland has good taste; what happened?
