The Clinton Street Theater kicks off their “From the Vault” grindhouse series tonight with a screening of the sinister-sexy Switchblade Sisters. To tide you over until then, I give you seven of the best car chases ever committed to celluloid:
Bullit (1968)
The French Connection (1971)
Cannonball (1976)
Corvette Summer (1978)
Ronin (1998)
The Bourne Identity (2002)
Ong-Bak (2003)

Enjoy!
The Blues Brothers- best chase ever!
Mad Max!!??
Gone In 60 Seconds (the original)
Vanishing Point
Two Lane Blacktop
Vanishing Point does deserve a mention. Of those listed I liked Ronin first, Bullitt second.
Raising Arizona
The first two Smokey and the Bandits, as well as Ron Howard's Eat My Dust, were landmarks in my youth...
Loved your idea of car chase list until I read it and found out that you don't have the slightest idea what you are talking about. Your list would have held some credence with me if you had one of the all time, never to be duplicated, but always to be imitated, chase scene (which if I am not mistaken might be one of the longest in the history of cinema) The Road Warrior. Shame on you. I agree with Bullitt, The French Connection and Ronin. Ong-Bak??? WTF?? No mention of the Blues Brothers? Learn something before you decide to open your mouth again, please.
What about To Live and Die in L.A.? The Seven-Ups? I'd also list some that have already been mentioned: The Road Warrior, The Blues Brothers...
Dear Everyone Else Who Commented,
I'm not sure if you noticed, but the author of this has made no mention that these are the ABSOLUTE INDISPUTABLE BEST, but 7 OF THE BEST, as in there are others that could be on this made up ABSOLUTE BEST EVER list that doesn't really exist in the first place. I'm not saying you can't list more of your favorites, but I don't think you should discredit the author because they didn't pick your favorite. I'll leave you with an example:
Good list, a couple of my favorites have to be the original Italian Job and The Blues Brothers.
The original Italian Job!! Easily the most creative chase scene ever. And the Blues Brothers should be in there as well.
Ronin..sucks big time. A movie w/o a plot and is known as one of Deniro stud!
Where's Matrix Reloaded? The highway scene lasted 15mins and one of the damnest car chase ever.
Rank up there with Bourne Supremacy
What about the Fifth Element?!?!? It revolutionized the car chase scene!!!!
well i hate to comment on somebodys elses posting, but ronin sucks?? the fifth element as best anything,,,wow wonders what kind of movies you people like. i will agree bout adding the blues brothers.
The car chase in "The Corruptor" deserves to be in that list
Way of the Gun. That was a strange car chase.
Diamonds are forever
View to a kill
The Seven-Ups! Come on!
Seems like everyone with half a clue puts Bullit at the top of the list. Its an overrated car chase, but its become the generic answer to the question. Are you kidding with Corvette Summer?
How can you go against Vanishing Point?
How did Dirty Mary Crazy Larry get missed off this list? Easily the best car chase movie of them all, and no CGI effects either - real stunts, real drivers and real speed. Oh, and a '69 Dodge Charger R/T. How much would I love to own one of those?!
Everytime I see a "greatest car chases" list, I always see truly classic ones (Bullitt, French Connection) peppered with a few wild cards (Live & Die in LA, The Hidden), but no one ever mentions "Short Time". That's probably because it's predominantly a feel-good movie starring Dabney Coleman. The car chase in it is as impressive as any I've ever seen and it deserves more attention. If you don't believe me, check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT0tdDgTitg
I think it's great that "Bullit" and "The French Connection" are at the top of the list, but, they should add "Vanishing Point" (1971) with Barry Newman.
speaking of James bond, How about "The spy who loved me" and the lotus taking out 2 motercycles, turning into a submarine and killing the hot evil chick with a surface to air? And don't forget "the man with the golden gun" and the side spin over the river?
Stole my ace in the hole - Short Time. Incredible car chase. Another forgotten car chase that was quite well done was the Peacemaker. A Mercedes versus 3 BMWs. It turned into a demolition derby in a town square. Pretty neat.
What, no "What's Up, Doc"?
"The Driver" with Ryan O'Neal. (I'm sure Bresson got the idea for "The Transporter" from this one!)
Okay its been Tooo many years to remember `The French Connection` and I didn't get to see it all the way through?, so can't comment on car-shot properly as its very foggy in my mind. `Ong-Bak`??? never saw it. Sorry.
That said, how the author could Not mention at all even in passing `Mad Max` or `The Blues Brothers` is sad.
"To Live and Die in L.A.," if it didn't start the whole let's-drive-the-wrong-way-on-the-freeway staple in current car chases, solidified it as a working trope. "Corvette Summer"? Please. And I agree that we should not count movies that are entirely chase scenes. And while "The Matrix Reloaded" has a 15-min chase scene, I personally never felt a sense of jeopardy or urgency for the characters there.
I agree wholeheartedly with the top two choices, "Bullitt" (albeit misspelled) and "French Connection".
"To Live and Die in L.A." I remember watching in the theater back in '85 and thinking, "Friedkin is just trying to kill time by echoing his own sequence in French Connection on a broader canvas!"
A couple others that were overlooked: "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry", "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Running Scared" (1986), which was definitely the funniest of them all.
One of the all-time great chases is in "The Matrix Reloaded?" Put down the bong, willya? There wasn't a frame of that chase that wasn't rendered by a computer. By comparison, the car chases of "Ronin" were accomplished in the craziest of ways: using actual cars, actual stunt drivers and actual roads.
Matrix Reloaded needs to be on this and Not Bourne Identity. I just watch Bourne the other day, and it's like the chase is in slow motion, it's almost boring. Great movie though
also, if you knew anything about that car chase from the matrix, shot of cars flying in the air and all of that....real.
Well...he got it right with Ronin. But got it wrong with not putting The Blues Brothers on the list. For shame! :D
If you're a fan of car chases there are a couple of nifty ones in 2006's "Crank" (and it's one of the most fun movies of the year to boot). I think a few other chases that merit mention are "The Terminator", "The Island", and though technically not a chase so much as a major accident, anybody get the heebeejeebies from "Final Destination 2" besides me?
Nice add,Ira...Final Destination 2 was just awesome..Ronin was my favorite, that was one crazy scene...and the opening chase in The Transporter was off the chain!
The car chase from Doug Liman's "Go".
If the Ronin chase was honestly shot at 24 fps without undercranking then hands down......
if the movie had been better it may be unanimous.
That being said, the Bourne movies (Damon) are no slouch in the car chase dept.
What about the Chase, starring Charlie Sheen and Kristy Swanson? Not much of a movie aside from the Chase itself.
Watch the scenes inside the car between Kristy & Sheen...they are supposed to be travelling at high speeds but the white lines are going by at what looks like less than 25 mph!

For me it has to be FEAR IS THE KEY opening scene, lasts about 20 mins long, Fantastic!
Then Dirty Mary Crazy Larry and of course The Blues Brothers!!!
Great list over all, but just one question: Doesn't a car chase need to have a car in it? Ong-Bak, while a good chase scene, doesn't have any cars. Those powered tricycles are not cars.
Next to Bullit and the French Connection, the Seven Ups deserve to be up there. Also, another movie that was a chase scene from beginning to end was "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World". Certainly that was the funniest chase movie ever filmed.
How about "Striking Distance"? Weak movie, great chase.
KRCummings is a diseased skank ho.
Raiders of the Lost Ark? Prolly the greatest chase ever.
The Driver with Ryan O'neal. Phenomenal car chases.
THE 7UPS, BATMAN BEGINS & THE GETAWAY(REMAKE).
THE 7UPS, BATMAN BEGINS & THE GETAWAY(REMAKE).
There are far more worthy car chases to mention. The Seven-Ups one is better than any of those mentioned. Ronin is totally overrated. The one in Cobra blows it away.
that list is horrible. the french connection chase sucks. get over it...its really NOT that good. Bourne? HA, those movies are overrated too. Besides Bullit and maybe, just maybe Ronin, the others are poop too. While maybe not technically a car chase, the freeway chase in T2 has to be in the top and what about the Rock?? And the Bond movies have plenty, I agree with the Spy Who Loved Me post. that was Epic. Matrix Reloaded deserves a shot too. Dont deny you were in awe during that one.

Matrix Reloaded - The Freeway Chase. Nothing beats a car chase where the laws of physics do not apply.
Great List.
Tough to pick so few.
I thought last year's film "DEJA VU" had a 'time travel' car chase was innovative and thrilling.
Might be top ten material...
Lethal Weapon 4
It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad World
When I saw the headline the chases that immediately came to mind were French Connection, Bullet, Raiders, and Road Warrior, which is my favorite of them all. I can't believe more people haven't mentioned Raiders though. I also thought that the Truck-Bike chase in T2 was very good. I don't understand the criticism of the guy who thought Ronin sucked. The list is about great chases - not great movies - and the chase in Ronin was pretty decent. It's also nice to see names of flicks I haven't heard of before like the 7ups or Vanishing Point. I was also confused by the writers choices of Ongbak and Corvette Summer. Different Stokes I guess.
Couple of classic comedy car chases: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and What's Up Doc.
No one mentioned "the Transporter?" Count me in for "Short Time" too. I still remember that movie because of that scene.
BULLITT is my top choice. It was the first time anything like that had been done -- and it was the most realistic. It looked real because it didn't look planned. Don't forget, folks, McQueen did virtually all of his own driving. No CGI in those days. Real cars, real speeds. And face it, it sure doesn't get any cooler than McQueen, late 60s, and San Francisco.
The Blues Brothers!
Ronin was a fantastic chase as it was an old-school chase. The film wasn't under-cranked and the cars were unmodified. Frankenheimer knew cars.
French Connection is great because it is visceral and at times claustrophobic.
The Matrix Reloaded chase was all flash and no substance and got quite boring towards the end and entirely dull watching the second time.
The Italian Job, the original one from the sixties is the most entertaining one I've ever seen. And the one from It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is the funniest.
bad boys 2
I always loved the chase scene from Running Scared. Soooooooo funny!
Hey and the original gone in sixty seconds 1974.

Hello? Smokey and the Bandit? The whole movie WAS a car chase scene!
