The Greek Cusina at SW 5th and Washington has been slapped with a $300 fine by the city’s noise control officer, Paul van Orden, who says he has lost patience with the venue’s ongoing noise problems.
GREEK: “BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM…”
On Fat Tuesday, the club’s bass was four times as loud as the legal limit, and audible four blocks away on Broadway, according to van Orden, who says the club needs to employ an acoustic engineer as soon as possible to fix its problems.
“They have been warned a ton of times,” he says. “But this is about more than just saying, we can turn it down.”
van Orden says the venue needs to close its windows if it wants to play loud music, and that the next fine they face could be $1000, followed by a $3000 fine, then face $5000 fines, one after the other.
“I’ve been patient,” he adds. “But if I do come back next week and cite them, I’m going to return in half an hour and cite them again. They could be looking at a couple of thousand dollars in a single night.”
We have a call in to the venue’s owner, Ted Papas, to get his side of the story.
Amen. Go get 'em, Paul!
I don't know. Remember folks, Greek Cuisina is kind of like the Portland Embassy for every 19- to 27-year-old that lives within 50 miles of here. People from fucking ALBANY drive up here for that place. I, for one, kind of like the idea of ten thousand suburbanite and exurbanite twentysomethings believing that Portland is all just one gignatic plate-smashing party 24 hours a day--where the poorly-mixed cosmopolitans flow like wine and the bass-heavy mash-ups of eminem and dexy's midnight runners throb throughout our vibrant, vibrant hearts.
That, and it's a good place to see some Greshamite titty. And lord knows we all like the titty.
that place is a joke. i was walking by there maybe six years ago in the middle of the night after it had closed and was dark, and i look inside the windows and see some guy creeping around with a huge handgun, and he looks at me and gives me the 'don't do anything' look and i keep walking.
and how many shootings or beatings have occurred outside or inside of it in the last few years?
looks like we have another possible candidate for the business death penalty.
Think of it this way. That place keeps most of those fuckers contained in one building, instead of wandering around the whole of downtown. Imagine the crowd in the blocks around Bannana Joes or whatever the fuck it's called now times 15, if the Cusina was gone.
What if it just burned to the ground one night with all of them trapped in there ? Would you shed a collective tear, Portland ?
Choose your words carefully. Ted Papas can and does pick up a table with his teeth.
I want something spinachy now
The Greek is a bastion of horrible behavior. There was a fight at a Petersons not to long ago, the one right next door to the Greek. A bunch of drunk employee's came in and then tried to jump the lone clerk. Nice.
That whopping $300 fine should set them straight. What a joke.

Anything that makes Papas miserable amuses me. The guy didn't win me over with his strident anti-food-cart campaign, and he seems to endorse bullying by his door people of protesters and other hideous stuff like that.
