Portland Bad Parking Karma

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Thu, Mar 22 at 12:59 PM

The guy at Ask-Steve.com has a great post up about the parking lot at SE 12th and Hawthorne (next to Tiny’s coffee, and kitty corner from Burgerville).

The parking lot on the corner of SE 12th & Hawthorne next to Tiny’s used to be open to the public. It seemed to be used primarily by Tiny’s Coffee patrons and commuters using it as a park and ride. The only sign on the property was for Burgerville, which sits across the intersection, so I assume they either owned it or were paying to have the sign there. Well, there’s a new parking profiteer in town and that’s all changed—very much for the worse….

This guy has managed to take this lot from a great community resource to a trashy eyesore and insult in a matter of weeks. Where was the neighborhood association through all this?!?!

Check out Steve’s blog for all the sordid parking details.

I'm kind of bitter (well, more bitter than usual) because I used to go to Tiny's all the time--but since I can't park in that lot anymore, it's really not worth driving over there and trying to find street parking. So I haven't been there in a while. Which sucks. I liked Tiny's.

I walk and ride tri-met, so I can pretty much go anywhere I want. It's nice not having to rely on parking infrastructure.

That's awesome, Orf. Good for you!

The owner is the property is Bankland LLC, which is Peter Perrin's. He owns property all over, including the couple of years old mini-strip mall at 20th & Division with the Starbucks.

You can do the math...

The neighborhood association for there is Buckman. On the OTHER side of Hawthorne it's Hosford-Abernethy (HAND) and we haven't heard anything about any plans.

while on the topic of parking at Tiny's, help convince the city to put some more bike racks out there.

I'm pretty sure there is a bike rack in front of Tiny's, inadequate though it may be.

Jeez, why not tell TINY'S to put up more bike racks????!!! Or get a kickstand... Friggin' communist....

how arrogant for anyone to assume any entitlements to someone else's private property.
all you know is that suddenly you are inconvenienced. your answer is what, everything that isn't 'community' is a WTO plan?

Ahw, I can't get coffee from Tiny's cause I'm too fat and lazy to use my feet. Too bad that parking lot isn't FREE anymore.

I LOVE my car and how it kills the Iraqis. I think we should cover all of Hawthorne in free parking lots for fat people!

I believe in the invisible hand. Adam Smith owns that and charges fees for invisible hand use.

If only Jesus would come down and purge Portland of whiny socialists. Or at least give them some money so they could afford stuff that was free or hand me downs.

Pretty fanciful narrative you've got going there Steve. I most especially love the "Total Recall" style of totally (albeit, premeditatedly) obfuscating the time line of events in your cute little novel of intrigue and socialism. Stalin would be proud of your propaganda skills. And Martin, your gift of cut and paste, much less ability to even navigate your way to PortlandMaps.com leaves me breathless. Quite the pair, you two.

n this context, there's no disrespect
so when I bust my rhymes, you break your necks

We got five minutes for us to disconnect
from all intellect and let the rythm effect

cause when we beat out, girl it's pullin' without
you wouldn't believe how we wow shit out

burnin' till it's burned out
turnin' till it's turned out

Everybody! Everybody!
Let's get into it, let's get stupid (in here)

Let's get retarded (chorus)

Lose control up outta yoursoul
don't move to fast, people just take it slow

don't get ahead, just jump into it
Y'all hear a body, the peas will do it

get started get stupid
don't worry bout people I'll walk ya through it.

Step by step, like you're into new kid
Inch by inch with the new solution
Transmit hits, with no delusion
The feeling's irresistible and that's how we movin'

Everybody! Everybody!
Let's get into it, let's get stupid (in here)

"...I specifically said he has every right to do what he wants with his property, but that what he's doing with the poles, cable and insulting hot pink signs is uncool..."

"...that this kind of trashy lot run by a guy who obviously sees anyone who isn't handing him cash as a nuisance is not what we want or need..."

"...And just like that, there was one of those ubiquitous-in-suburbia rug vendors set up there this past weekend..."

"...I hope you'll join me in boycotting both the parking lot and the vendors who set up there..."

"...next to Tiny's ..."

"...It seemed to be used primarily by Tiny's Coffee patrons..."

"...People continued to pull in there long enough to stop in to Tiny's ..."

" ...I've always pulled in here to grab my coffee and just want to see if it's okay to continue doing that..."

"...except on the far southeast corner of the lot, as far from Tiny's as possible..."

"...This guy has managed to take this lot from a great community resource to a trashy eyesore and insult in a matter of weeks..."

Now tell me, it's all about the poles...

You so pitifully obvious. And way thinned skinned for a guy who starts his blog with the tag line, "Why settle for your way when you can do it mine?" This is too easy and bores me. Ciao.

Gee, Garcia. This is only the 3rd place you've posted a cpoy of this comment. As I said elsewhere, thanks for reposting my blog entry for me.

For everyone else here, someone over on the original post pointed out that "Garcia is the lot controller, and his boss is actually a really good person, and not a prick like this 'garcia' is becoming."

I never said this should be public property. If you read my post, my beef is with the fact that he told me he was fine with people parking there long enough to get some coffee to go -- and then put up barriers the next day. Then he put up insulting signs (see my post for pictures) on the cables.

Incidentally, Jerry's name is actually Eric -- I heard wrong on the phone -- and he's posted a comment of explanation over on my blog entry.

Wow.

I have just this moment been made aware of this blog. (Well, a few moments ago, I have had a lot of reading to catch up on.)I never, ever thought that this, seemingly simple real estate project would ever fester into the obviously hateful and discordant issue it has sadly become.

I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Eric Johnston. I am a projects coordinator and property manager in the employ of Mr. Peter Perrin. I guess too, that I am also your "Jerry" as mentioned in your original post last Thursday. I do remember the phone call about the in and out coffee parking that I had discussed with, I guess, you Steve. I don't know if this was a "names have been changed" kinda thing, or if I wasn't quite clear on the phone when we spoke. (I had been down and ill with a respiratory infection for a couple of weeks and could hardly speak coherently.)

If I could, I'd like to address your (Steve's) concerns first. (I'll deal with the rabble rouser's in a minute.) First, I am not here in hopes of making any new friends. I pretty much knew I wasn't going to be very popular from the very start of this dreaded mission. I am sorry for the inconvenience I appear to be putting everyone through, but I will not feel guilty for the choices I have had to make from the beginning of this endeavor. My job description is to effectively and prudently "phase-in", if you will, a property that has been sitting practically abandoned for years - into a viable and fiscally sound business venture. It was never a "public" or "free" parking resource, but rather a piece of privately owned land - that decided not to enforce any parking or trespassing authority. That was their choice.
On Day 1, my first action upon being charged with my new duties, was to introduce myself to Tiny's and their staff. I gave them my name and number and to explain what was going on with the lot, next door. (A hell of a day that was I tell you! You try to politely coerce 40 daily parkers away so that the underground survey team could conduct their scans.)

My next course of action was to inform the 35 or more cars of the change of ownership, and politely invite them to take advantage of a very reasonable offer for monthly parking that would soon be going into effect. (A full 35 to 40 percent less than the comparable service by nearby pay to park businesses.)Also, making a reserved section available to local business' patrons was also proposed - and rejected.
After almost a month, I had received no reply from any of the previous parkers, so I effected a restricted entry protocol. It wasn't long at all until I realized that a physical barrier was going to be needed.

There is much much more I will add shortly, but right now duty calls. Until then.

Hello again.
What a beautiful day it was this Thursday! I am really looking forward to more sunshine now that spring has finally arrived.
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I've had much to reflect on personally and much counsel by friends to absorb. The overwhelming majority of advice has been to just walk away and give this debate no further energy since it seems that minds are all made up and opinions have been set in stone, whatever the facts.

And besides, it's just some guys blog.

But it is these closest of friends who know my intentions best too. As much as they would want me to share with everyone my community involved "market place" idea - They are also the ones most protective of me and my my feelings and wish to shield me from this style of forum's disdain. Some, more "militantly" than others. I have been racking my brain trying to solve this "Garcia" conundrum. I have 2 likely suspects, and closest of comrades. They have both stoically endured my interrogations and wrath of ire for the position they have placed me in. To be honest, the happenstance of events of which their defensive perspective was based, I cannot blame. It was, I believe, out of a mis-directed sense of protection for my feelings, as I was vehemently being portrayed as some sort of villain that I am not.

The smart as signs however..... Pilot error. No excuses for my lack of tact. (Although there was a subset of aggravating and condescensions factors preceding my frustration fueled posting fit.)

I truly hope that you give this project your support. I've already secured the interest of a group of very nice folks who are excited about bringing their foods and concessions to the neighborhood. Also, from the beginning, I have envisioned the possibilities of not just full time vending, but also the ability for anyone to showcase and market their particular craft, music, art or exhibition. I really want to make this an enjoyable venture for all.

As always, I encourage any and all ideas you may have.
