Portland Curfew Crackdown Corners Moms

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Tue, Mar 27 at 10:17 AM

Last weekend, the cops had a curfew mission in NE Portland, to crack down on kids who were out too late over spring break. There was concern that the mission would unfairly target African American youth, as Matt Davis reported last week:

But some activists are concerned that the pilot project will target African American youth disproportionately, because it is being tried in NE and Downtown Portland, and not, for example, in the West Hills.

“I’m really concerned about this pilot,” said Jo Ann Bowman, the co-chair of the mayor’s racial profiling committee at its meeting last week. “I think it could exacerbate this problem that we are trying to solve.”

Bowman says she will go on ride-alongs to ensure the new measures are being used fairly. Police Chief Rosie Sizer told the committee she feels the measures are responding to community concerns.

“I’m sure we will be able to recover the information on which parents are being cited because of the pilot,” she said. “But honestly, I do not want to do more harm than good.”

Well, the cops released some stats from the weekend mission. There’s not a racial breakdown, but there is something interesting about “which parents are being cited.” The moms are getting citations—not the dads. Via NE Precinct Commander Bret Smith:

Five (5) juveniles were stopped on Friday (3/23/07) and four (4) mothers were cited in violation of ORS 163.577 - Failure to Supervise.

Nine (9) juveniles were stopped on Saturday (3/24/07) and two (2) mothers were cited in violation of the ORS 163.577 - Failure to Supervise. One (1) eligible mother was not cited, and one (1) mother was not able to be located to be cited.

All went well and no problems were noted.

Comments

maybe there are no dads around to be cited.

When a divorce comes about it's the mom who generally takes custody. Looks like luck of the draw for them to get cited as well. Go dads.
