News HANGOVER PEACE PROTESTS: Too many messages, not enough people.

Posted by The Unpaid Intern on Mon, Mar 19 at 3:50 PM

DSC_0144.jpgIf you were at Terry Schrunk Plaza today for the No More Invasions, No More War protests, you know that according to the speakers, the war is:

1.Determining the character of America.
2.Taking money that could provide millions of Americans with healthcare.
3.A dishonor to troops who have died to continue on with it.
4.Part of the neo-conservative movement to get more troops into the Middle East and add to our occupation of Palestine, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

And of course, don’t forget: 5.More Americans care about who is favored to win on American Idol than care about the war!

I think that about sums up the majority of the messages being talked about during the two-hour long “lunchtime demonstration,” which drew about 70-80 onlookers, one war supporter, and a handful of police officers that watched from across the street. The event was “cosponsored” by six different groups such as Peace and Justice Works, Families for Peace, Women in Black and was endorsed by a handful of other organizations like Northwest Veterans for Peace. The groups planned to reconvene at 4pm today to “commute visibility action and message to the Iraqi people,” by holding up large letters to spell out a message. But it’s raining, so who knows…

DSC_0135.jpgAnother group planned to hold a solidarity protest outside of the courthouse where their friends were being arraigned in connection to yesterday’s fallout between protesters and police, but nothing ever got underway. The protest was set to start at 2pm, and although a few small groups gathered to talk with those exiting the courthouse, no demonstration took place. One counter-protestor, claiming to be "the one true American" at the protests, was hanging around by his lonesome:DSC_0149.jpg
