The NW Examiner neighborhood paper is reporting that Music Millennium on NW 23rd might not make it through the year. According to the story, in their latest issue (it’s not online), owner Terry Currier had to take out a second mortgage on the East Burnside store to meet operating expenses, while also losing $4 to $6K a month at the NW 23rd store. The NW 23rd store’s $13K a month lease expired in February, and Currier hasn’t signed a new one.
“I can’t guarantee that it will be open beyond the end of the year,” Currier told the NW Examiner.
stop downloading music!!! this is what happens...
Business models for music delivery have changed. I can't help feeling like the "High Fidelity" boys are an endangered species now. Perhaps MM could do some more online stuff?
Sorry, MM, I used to shop there a lot, but then I'd go there and then I'd go to Everyday Music and Everyday Music consistently met my music needs.
Losing $4-6K a month in operating expenses can't be fun. I hope he changes his business model or finds something else fun to do.
The biggest downer here would be the in store shows they have would end. What other record store in town has bands in to play? It wasn't that long ago they had Paul Westerburg (or insert your favorite here) for crying out loud!!
Jackpot records regularly hosts bands.
I've always been disappointed with the selection at MM. They lack the bulk of used music that record shops like EM & Jackpot have. MM simply cannot compete w/ EM in terms of quantity and variety of music, and cannot compete w/ Jackpot in terms of coverage of local and more obscure bands.
I'm really not sure what niche MM was trying to fill?
Well, MM is a legacy player. They've been around for decades...but unforch, didn't change with the times (i.e., adding lots and lots of inventory so that potential buyers never go away unsatisfied, as I did too many times).
Again, I'm sorry to see it (potentially) go, but I want my record store shopping experience to be one-stop and done.
MM was great back when you could pick up a pipe or bong along with the latest Judas Priest LP.
The city is changing out with the old in with the rich californians.. It's not cool, not saying it's right.. But Club Portland + Silverado's (center of PDX gay discrict) are moving to make way for Condos, the Chinese and Homeless Communities have been pushed out, so have the Blacks..
It's been happening so fast and vast.
Fuck the Pearl + NW 23rd Ave and all the dumb cronies that shop there..
Oh yeah and MM does not have a decent selection, the 1 on east side does..
I'll cry when that one closes.
the Old Town/Chinatown exodus had very little to do with Californians. The fact is that the Chinese population has been changing in Portland. China Town represents an older generation of Chinese, who immigrated under different circumstances and from different regions than the recent generations of Chinese immigrants.
Actually Alex, the Pearl Virus is sustained by people who can afford 250k+ apartments, aka retired Californians.
