News Re: Is a Rapist Prowling Inner SE Portland?

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Tue, Mar 6 at 4:16 PM

I just talked to Sgt. Brian Schmautz, public info officer for the police. The good news is “there is no serial rapist” in SE Portland. There was a sexual assault, which detectives would like to work with the victim to solve so they can catch the guy. But the bad news is that the MySpace bulletins—started by one woman, it seems—are hampering the effort. Whoever’s broadcasting the bulletins needs to “let this go and let this victim heal up enough so she cooperates with the detectives. She’s incredibly traumatized,” Schmautz says. The bulletins (and other media attention to the case) are “counter productive,” and “harming detectives ability to find the person,” Schmautz says.

Well in that case, I'm sure as hell glad that nobody did anything irresponsible like posting anonymous, uncorroborated Myspace bulletins on a widely-read Portland blog.

Oh wait...

By the way, did you guys hear about the murderer that breaks into young women's cars? Yeah, he hides in the back seat waiting for them to come back. He's got a hook for a hand, and yellow teeth. Looks kind of like an asshole. He likes to hang around Alberta Street.

I just can't believe that marjorie's bartender was off base.

If the neighborhood's all abuzz about something—which it clearly is, even if it's abuzz about an bulletin that maybe someone shouldn't have posted, but which isn't false—I'm glad the Mercury's looking into it.

And Marjorie's bartender wasn't all that off base. She thought the cops were being quiet about this one for a good reason...so they could catch the guy. Turns out she's right.

Oh please, Alex. Amy's post was not irresponsible in the least. She was very upfront with it being a rumor and not necessarily corroberated by police. Pandemonium did not ensue because we are reasonable and rational citizens that can take a word of caution without letting it paralyze us with fear. Stop being so antagonistic.
