If the internet is the modern day equivalent to the wild west, You Tube is, like, gold country. With very little money, good timing, and a bit of hype, you can become an “internet sensation” overnight. Some young designers are trying the Tube out as a forum for low rent advertisements of their wares. Such as one James Kendi, who I’ve mentioned before as a friend of a (boy)friend whose tie design ended up around the neck of a certain Justin Timberlake while he was hosting the infamous Saturday Night Live episode that spawned the fabulous “Dick in a Box” routine. Kendi’s You Tube commercials are simple, they’re of his friends goofing off essentially, dancing on a bed, doing a hammy cover of “House of the Rising Sun,” (albeit with the guitar part played by Mike from Ratatat), or scooting around in those wheeled sneakers. I don’t watch the big TV very often, but when I do, it’s nice to have a remote handy to mute the commercials, but this has nothing to do with that scene. It’s just a fledgling designer putting a snippet of his personality into the machine, hoping to scratch out a good reputation. I think more designers should be doing this, if for no other reason than it’s charming. The one I’m posting here is my favorite. It’s called, “Yeah, sure,” and features one of Kendi’s hoodies.
