So there’s a whole lotta bands out there with the word “black” in their names. Let’s just do a random sampling from this week’s music calendar…
Blue Skies for Black Hearts
Blackheart Whitenoise
Black Elk
Big Black Cloud
Black Brown
Night Was Black
Dark Black
DJ Blackout
And in a cutesy move a lot of venues book similar-sounding bands on the same night. This is so not cute. Don’t even get me started on all the “I Am” bands: I Am Ghost, I Am the Arm, I Am the Ocean, I Am the Avalanche, etc.
Is it just me, or are most band names starting to sound the same? I wonder what the new trend will be. I’m going with “I Am the Puce,” or maybe “Magenta Dog Autumn.”
Thank you for proving my point, Alex! It's so confusing.
wolfmother, wolf parade, raised by wolves, sea wolf, peter and the wolf, wolfman jack, we are wolves.
Wolfs and Horses... I'm hoping for Koalas next.
Hmm lemme see, how 'bout: Grey Koalas From The Planet Green Leaf -- oh wait isn't that already a band name?
Bright Black Morning Light
Black Heart Procession
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Oh, and Blue Skies for Black Hearts reminds me a lot of Black Tape for a Blue Girl
And, yeah, wolves. And cobras.
Don't forget Wolf Eyes, Big Black, and I Am The World Trade Center.
umm...I think we're specifically talking about Portland bands' predilection for blackness. I'm sure we could put millions of bands down if we looked (inter)nationally.
By the way. Why black?
"I name my band 'black,' because black is how I feel on the inside."
dude, it's totally like "Here Comes a Big Black Cloud". The poor bastards are Katrina victims, show some respect!
Blue Skies For Black Hearts are like a well aged wine, however. They've been doin' it in Portland since before half the city has lived here. All these new bands are just unoriginal.
Think about how many bands there are out there and then count how many of those bands live in Portland. Face it...we have a lot of musicians and everybody is looking for an original name. Sometimes bands walk that line between trying to be too original and then picking a name that is painful to even say out loud. I'll take the name Blue Skies for Black Hearts over, "Miss Anne Thrope," any day.
On the wolf names...Steaming Wolf Penis has got to be the best "wolf" name. I mean, come on, it's steaming!

I thought Blue Skies for Black Hearts and Big Black Cloud were the same band for the longest time. I now know they're different, but I still can't remember which is which.
