Shhhhh!
The Beastie Boys played a super-secret show for Wieden + Kennedy this past Friday, were you there? We weren’t allowed in, so no show report here, sorry. Unconfirmed rumor on the street is that the Beasties were paid a cool $250,000 to play.
“Money Makin Money Money Makin.”
Photo courtesy of W+K Lunchbox. They sort of look like The Blues Brothers in that picture, wonder if Dan Aykroyd was around?
The question is: How much did the whole shebang cost? Did anybody get food poisoning? If you work there, why not send a salacious email detailing EVERY SORDID DETAIL from your gmail account and RUN THE RISK OF BEING FIRED!?? It's:mdavis@portlandmercury.com
Once again, 1.Huge global advertising firm, 2.48-hour party. How hard can it be?

I like a block away from there (the party was on mississippi, at that big vat-like bunker-looking place across the street from Laughing Planet), and a few weeks earlier had received a notice in my mailbox alerting nearby residents that soon W+K will be having a big semi-private party, and so they apologise in advance for the noise and traffic. I remember the flyer saying that Thursday was their super-private celebration downtown, and then Friday was the one semi-private one on Mississippi. We took the notice to be an invitation.
I walked by the place when they were still setting up. The fence was cracked, and the opening guarded by two small but Marine-looking guys. I had this exchange with some young ladies standing outside the fence:
"What's going on, uh?"
"We're waiting in line."
"Cool, for what?"
"For a party."
"What party?"
"We don't know."
"You don't know? But you're in line..."
"We're working at it."
"Okay. Is there a cover charge, like, as in, can I go to the party?"
"It's a private party."
They weren't very helpful. Furthermore, they appeared to be sort of dumb. So then I wandered around and bothered more people. I learned about the Beastie Boys, and how they were eating burritos. Many people expressed that they wanted free booze. But none of them appeared to be invited to the party. When the time came for the party I was already drunk down the street, and I forgot about trying to sneak in. I walked by once, and it didn't look or sound very exciting. I walked by again at about 2:30am. The place appeared completely empty. But there were six cabs waiting out in front.
The end.
