Creepy arrest alert: Portland police say they arrested a man driving a “fictitious police car” in North Portland on Saturday night.
Officers stopped the “polite, well-spoken” 23-27 year-old driver of what appeared to be an unmarked police car, a dark blue 2000 Ford Crown Victoria, in North Portland at 11pm—after not recognizing the driver and becoming suspicious. It turned out, the driver’s plates were stolen. From the cops:
The vehicle had strobe type lights in the grill and the driver had attached a lap top computer to the center console area which could be mistaken for a Portland Police Bureau MDC. The driver was wearing a pair of black uniform style pants and a blue shirt that is the same color as our uniform shirt. He had fashioned a clear tube from his shirt to his ear so that it appeared he was wearing a radio ear piece. He was also in possession of a modified police badge and fictitious police identification.Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have been stopped by the “fictitious cop.” But then again, how would you know?
Ha ha ha!
where'd this article come from? link?
i doubt he was able to get around to anything really dubious.
you would like to think some woman getting raped by who she thought was a cop, or someone robbed and kidnapped (or any other reason you could think of to fake being a cop, crime-wise) would get turned into a big deal right away, because the cops would want to warn everybody to look out the second something like that happened.
he was probably just some guy who really enjoyed the power trip that being a cop provided, and couldn't get into the bureau, so his only other option was to pretend.
let me guess...
owns lots of guns, has a long history of being unable to maintain healthy relationships with the opposite sex, is a registered and strident republican, probably has a history of being unable to control his temper.
Link, Lyle? It came straight from the cops...we do occasionally break news on Blog Town. Occasionally.
oh great, so that means they might read my comment and see where i casually toss out the fact that people want to be cops sometimes for the power trip?
no offense, of course, guys.
The cops' backgrounding process aims at ruling out the power trippers—that's not to say it's perfect, by any means, but that's what the background checks are for.
People who fail those checks are free to find work as private security, however...
I was pulled over on N. Lombard between MLK and Denver on Saturday night (for missing the license plate on the front of the vehicle, but just given a warning). Wonder if it was him?
for portland police?
i guess. good for them.
i think i mentioned this on another post once when the police were being discussed, but a while back i was looking around blogs and found a link to a couple of websites that are basically where people who are in the nypd and chicago police go to talk amongst themselves.
they're called nypd rant and second city cop (look it up on google).
i swear to god, and i'm not exaggerating, of all the pointless, wasted time i've spent on the internet (and trust me, i've spent a lot), i've never seen anywhere near the amount of blatant racism, ignorance, misogyny, idiocy etc etc that i've seen on those two sites. anywhere NEAR it.
i got so enraged reading those sites and realizing these people are out with guns, making a nice living off the public dime, that i started to write up an article with the hopes of getting it published somewhere, but then i realized that if they were ever called on it they could just say that you couldn't prove the guys posting on those sites were actually cops, and basically nah nah nah nah nah. even though, again, if you go there and start reading, it's an irrefutable fact that they all are.
so i guess what i'm saying is that if the PPD can produce background checks that weed out the a-holes successfully, they should pass it along to NYC and chicago.
but i have a hard time believing we're THAT much better than any other city.
Or you could just read the real story over at the Trib's site:
http://www.localnewsdaily.com/news/story.php?story_id=117746506237892400
It's a well-written piece. Fortunately for me, Jacob Quinn Sanders is leaving the Trib shortly.
Suggested headline for print edition:
Creepy Faux PoPo arrested in NoPo.
The Tribune never came up with that, now, did they? Eh?! We'll take it...
actually, someone was doing this in Northern CA last year, too. he was pulling over women and then sexually assaulting them.
