Portland’s more rambunctious soccer supporters are a bunch of sissies compared to some of those in England. But this came in from an anonymous emailer (only identified as “a member of the Timbers Army”) on Monday:
Don’t know if you’re aware of the Timbers Army, the supporters of the local United Soccer League side the Portland Timbers. They drink, they swear, they sing for 90 minutes, they make witty banners and chants, they constitute about 20% of the regular attendance at PGE Park. Well, there’s new management over at the Timbers and the Timbers Army seem to be in their sights as a group that needs to be contained, curtailed, silenced and dealt with. Restrictions on language and flag poles are in place for the coming season, which opens 4/21. And today the club announced that Timber Jim, the longtime mascot of the club (going back to the NASL/Pele days of the ’70s) can no longer post on the very active Timbers Army message board. Here’s a thread on the Timbers Army forum about the new flagpole rules. A representative post is:
No flagpoles = no freedom = republicans = war = death. If you’re anti-flagpole, you’re pro-death.A representative from the allegedly “pro-death” Timbers management is yet to return a call for comment. Looks like a fun season is brewing…
The Timbers Army is the best thing the team has going for it. Even the players say so. The rules against the Army are stupid and shortsighted. There may be other regular patrons, but none have the same passion and energy. Who cares if a few people who come once a year find the Army over the top? IT'S FOOTBALL, DAMMIT!!!! You want to watch a game of bridge, stay home and play one!
Amusing that of all the posts on the thread, the "pro-death" sarcasm is the one you pulled. In context, it was just a good-natured jab at one of the other regular posters/"sissies" on that board. But regardless...
... GO TIMBERS. See you on the 21st!
DB:Down with your kids and their little pissy flagpoles. I spit in their angelic, naive, flag-deprived faces. Unless we pull these flags now, your children will turn into the hooligans they are clearly destined to become. If we could have your children adopted, we would.
VIC: We would rather you did stay at home and play bridge, than POLLUTE our stadium with your foul attitude and foul mouth. Down with hooliganism! Up with bridge-playing fans!
AGNELLO: This reporter is clearly trying to shit-stir. It's irresponsible and we won't stand for it.
I am stirred. Happy?
I will never be happy, not until all the Timbers Army has been silenced! Not until every last one has been PUT TO DEATH!
There's actually quite a smoldering little story here. The ongoing culture clash between the Euro-/Latino-style soccer support of the Timbers Army and the old fashioned 'Merican sit-quietly-and-watch mentality of management has reached a new level of acrimony.
For a full sense of how the Timbers Army feel about their treatment at the hands of management (whether it's PGE Park or the Timbers themselves pulling the strings), take a look here: http://tinyurl.com/36c3p3
After repeated attempts to speak to someone (anyone!) in Timbers management about this issue, I've received the run-around again and again. If people think the Timbers Army is immature, they should spend half a second trying to deal with the petty, childish "professionals" who run the Timbers and Beavers. It's pathetic that they represent our city in any fashion.
I have a 6 year old I took to several games last year. She loved sitting over near the Timbers Army. It's the best and only atmosphere at PGE park.
Agnello Out!
Here's more from the O's Timbers blog: "A few questions were asked about the Timbers Army and the fans in general. Ticket sales are up this year from last. Wilkinson told me that he loves the enthusiasm of the Timbers Army but doesn't like the foul language. He also said that he would be happy to meet with the group but that the biggest problem is that the Timbers Army doesn't have designated leaders to work with."
So, he likes their money, but they have no right to fully express themselves within PGE Park (geez, this guy should never attend a sporting event back east). He considers it a "problem" that a group of fans doesn't have "leaders."
If Timbers Army folks want to make their impact heard, the only way is through reducing the amount of money they give the team - whether thats through gate receipts, concessions or what have you.
Can't we talk about baseball?
No matter what draconian stupidity PGE's beauracrats and security get up too, we, the Timbers Army, are an Ungoverable Force, but an Ungovernable Force that is easily the most fun you'll consistently have for the summer. Do join us!

Tis is plain silly to ban flagpoles when there has been no problems with them in the past!
The worst part about this for me is how do I explain this to my kids.
I have three kids. A 12 year old, 11 year old, and a two year old.
During this offseason they have been saving up their allowance. For what you might ask. They bought two 3 foot by 5 foot flags and a small handheld flag for their little sister.
The FO needs to worry about things like team wins instead of "PETTY" things like this.
