News Man sues Greek Cusina owners for $600,000 over triple assault

GREEK: “vicious security” allegations
A man beaten unconscious in May 2005 by three security guards at the Greek Cusina on SW Washington is suing the club’s owners, Ted Papas and John Papatheodorou, for $600,000—alleging they are partially responsible for the beating because they hired a three-time convicted felon as their head of security.
The plaintiff, Kurt Kreutzer, was dragged back into the club by security guards Jeremy Hanson and Arthur Stebbins at the direction of the club’s head of security, Sean McCorkle, on May 3rd, 2005 (Kreutzer had been ejected moments earlier by security over a “minor dispute with a fellow customer,”) the lawsuit alleges. McCorkle already had prior convictions for burglary, unlawful possession of a firearm, attempted delivery of a controlled substance to a minor (all felonies) and criminal impersonation and criminal mischief (both misdemeanors)—at the time.
“In placing such a vicious and violent person with a known history of antisocial behavior in a position of authority the defendants Ted Papas, John Papatheodorou, and Downtwown Deli and Greek Cusina put patrons and the general public in danger of serious bodily harm,” the suit alleges.
McCorkle allegedly punched Kreutzer several times in the face in the club’s elevator until it stopped at one of the upper floors of the Cusina, not open to the public and without a security camera. The suit alleges:
Once the elevator reached the upper floor the beating became severe. McCorkle struck the plaintiff with a series of hard punches to the face, head, ribs and kidneys. At McCorkle’s request Stebbins and Hanson joined in and punched and kicked the plaintiff. After several hard punches the plaintiff fell to the floor. McCorkle then kicked the plaintiff and stomped on his head with his steel-toed boots. Between punches and kicks, McCorkle yelled at the plaintiff saying: “You don’t disrespect the Greek mafia;” “I’ll kill you right here;” “I’m gonna go get a shotgun and blast you;” “You want me to get Ted Papas;” and “You disrespected Ted Papas’ house.”Papas—the club’s owner—is reportedly in Las Vegas and could not be reached for comment by Blogtown. The suit continues:
During the course of the beating, which lasted 22 minutes, defendant McCorkle picked up a large metal tank, which could have been a fire extinguisher or a C02 tank, and struck the plaintiff in the head causing the plaintiff to lose consciousness.Kreutzer—the victim—suffered an aneurysm of the temporal artery, facial trauma, and significant contusions of the head, neck, ribs and back—according to the suit. The three security guards pled guilty to felony criminal charges and are now in prison.
Kreutzer's lawsuit hinges on attempts by the Portland Police Bureau in 2001 to oppose a liquor license renewal submission by the cusina. In order to address the bureau's concerns about the the venue, the club's owners, Ted Papas and John Papatheodorou, entered into a "compliance plan, "as part of which, they agreed to have all security personnel certified by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST)."
Under DPSST rules, felonies supposedly rule violent wannabes out of the security industry. Not every downtown club follows the DPSST's certification requirements, however, and they are scantly enforced.
The suit alleges that in hiring McCorkle—whose "reputation [as a vicious and violent person] and violent exploits were known to Ted Papas and John Papatheodorou," the club owners acted negligently and broke an earlier compliance agreement with the police to get their security state certified.
"We hope this lawsuit will shed light on the negligent and dangerous hiring policy of the Downtown Deli and Greek Cusina," says the victim's attorney, Steven Rayne. "And that other victims of their vicious security will come forward to tell their story."

Sounds like you Portlanders are a bunch of Crypto-racists. Where's the tolerance and multicultural love. I guess it don't count because Greeks are basically white. If this was a black or Arab restaurant you cowards wouldn't have a thing to say.

I think that when you are a guest in someones place you don't disrespect what they have to offer. If you don't like what they have just pay the bill, leave, and never come back. You don't go and make a complaint and make an ass out of the owner. You're bound to get an ass whooping.
Worst service of any restaurant in town. Scary, scary employees. And they harvest info from driver licenses if you attend the club. It ain't about being Greek, folks, it's about being thugs with some dirty biz going on and complete contempt for their legit clientele. Portland doesn't need these guys. Let's get them gone before someone dies. Anyone who thinks this is an exaggeration should go check it out.
Its about time someone sued them sobs!! I hate that place!! Terrible service and lots of scarry rumors. I know my friends and I will never go there again. As for the unfortunate man who was kidnapped and beaten I hope he gets everything he has coming to him plus some. Its time for these clubs to get there shit together!!
