I won’t lie to you—working in this building for the last couple of months has been like living under an avalanche of charred meat. Considering any number of things we’ve done to piss off vegans, plus our recent pork issue, it’s been downright hard to be one of the dwindling number of non-meat eaters left in the office.
Until now!
Glimmering like a cruelty-free oasis is news that a brand-spankin’ new, all vegetarian food cart has opened on 33rd and Hawthorne, not terribly far from the Mercury’s palatial complex. Sweet bearded Jesus, thank you for bringing us Veggielicious!
According to the Veggielicious myspace page, it’s got all your food cart staples (a hamburger called “The Big Mock,” chili dogs) plus more exotic offerings, like a “vital tofu” sandwich and an eggless egg salad sandwich. Has anybody been there yet? What’d you think?
Nope. Amy measured it with her handy map. It's close, but Hawthorne wins out.
The Merc has been downright hostile against vegans of late. I keep thinking "Is being veg so pervasive in Portland that it's hip for an alt to keep bashing it?"
Between the lamb slaughter, Ms. Skinner's rant on the benefits of leather (another attack on vegans) and then the pork issue, I ask myself why I continue to read a publication so hostile towards my world perspective. I'm not looking for a local rag to validate my life choices, but the veg bashing at the Merc has gotten out of hand.
Honestly I think a lot of this is as a result of the personal bent of Marjorie Skinner the Managing Editor of the paper.
I went and thought the burger was grubbin. Gotta love the veggielicious convenience factor. stoked.
Portland's rep as veg friendly is certainly valid (to a point) given that there are a number of restaurants that are completely meat free and many that at least acknowledge that vegetarians/vegans want something more than salad or french fries. But strangely, I knew way more veg. people in the Midwest. I have only a small handful of friends here who don't do meat, some of whom have recently started eating it again and any number of people who are downright proud of their blood lust -which is sad. As far as Geoff's ascertation that the Mercury has been "downright hostile" to vegans, sorry, I just don't see it. Although the "pork" issue was pretty pointless.

I guess, but you're probably even closer to the many vegan/veggie options downtown than you are to 33rd & Hawthorne...
