Politics A Second Challenge to the Gay Rights Laws

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Wed, May 16 at 12:20 PM

This morning, another group filed to collect signatures that would put HB 2007 and SB 2—the domestic partnership and non-discrimination laws—on the November 2008 ballot.

The group—Defense of Marriage and Family, Again!, as former state Senator Marylin Shannon told me on the phone last night (she emphasized the exclamation point)—is led by chief petitioners Janice Bentson, Aleksandr Voronko, and Carolyn Wendell.

And I just spoke with Jack Brown—one of the three men who’d filed the first challenge to the laws, on Monday. They’re dropping their petition, and joining the Defense of Marriage and Family, Again! (oh, I can’t wait to type that a million times over the next year—what’s the abbreviation on that, DOFMA! ?).

“They felt better equipped to handle the logistics, and they have a larger organization in place,” Brown said—once again in his car when reached, but this time at a traffic light, not a grocery store parking lot. “I don’t care who leads the charge, I’m willing to help.”

Amy, just call them what I'm calling them.

just remember - these folks do believe in heaven and hell - and boy are they going to be in for a shock when they realize where they've landed themselves!

It is interesting that 1,028,546 Oregonians vote to define marriage in Oregon as being between 1 man and 1 woman, yet 55 legislators and 1 governor can take away their votes.

34 counties voted to define marriage as being between 1 man and 1 woman, yet the legislature decides to ignore their votes and instead requires the whole state to live under the liberal values of the 2 counties that were on losing side of Measure 36.

Some folks in Portland just don't understand the rights and votes of those who don't live in Portland. Don't you think they'd start respecting the rights of the majority of Oregonians who want to keep the laws that have served us well the last 148 years.

That might be why the Oregon Democrats have been hemmoraging registered voters for the last 31+ years.

Think about this: since 1976 (when the Oregon Democrats adopted a socially liberal platform...pro-abortion, pro-public funding of abortions, pro-gay rights and pro-extreme environmental policies) the Democrats have had a net LOSS of about 26,000 registered voters while the Republicans have gained around 375,000 registered voters.

It's interesting that Oregonians were told by neo-con groups that marriages are NOT civil contracts in 2004, but now neo-cons are saying the exact opposite.

It's interesting that Oregonians have NEVER voted on discrimination based on sexual orientation, but now the neo-cons insist on shoving their bigotry down our throats.

The 55 legislators and the governor are in public office because the MAJORITY of Oregonians put them there. By trying to refer HB2007 and SB2, Marylin Shannon and her neo-con cohorts are saying that the majority are stupid and can't be trusted to elect their representatives and governor.

If Democrats were losing grounds in Oregon, then the Republicans must have screwed up big time in 2004 by losing control of the House and failing to put a moderate Republican in the governor's office.
