(I wish we had a “girls-only” tag.)

I just found an excellent reason to do no more actual work this afternoon: BSC Headquarters, where “Tiff” blogging her way through the Baby-sitters Club books. I realize this will only be of interest to a small percentage of Blog Townies, but, whatever. Like I care about charter reform.
So, I THOUGHT I remembered those books. Claudia hides candy bars and wears funky earrings, Stacey makes diabetes seem glamorous, Dawn has glowing skin because she eats a lot of tofu…
But the recaps of each book bring back the details. The crushes, the fashion, the weird kids they baby sit for, all summarized with appropriately snarky commentary (“I don’t care if Candy Land is boring, Kristy. You’re the fucking babysitter. Get over yourself.”). Tiff also deconstructs each cover, a pretty hilarious exercise—especially since I do remember pouring over those covers as a kid trying to decide which sitter was prettiest. (“Okay, so the cover question: “Is Stacey’s friend Laine super mature or just a super snob?” I think it should say: “What’s with the bitch-face, Sweetheart?”). Good stuff.
YES!!! This rules! Now if someone would write a blog about Sweet Valley High, my life would be complete. Damn, maybe I need to go reread those books.
If only someone would do this with the Hardy Boys. I used to think there was something kind of unsettling about how Joe and Frank were ALWAYS together. I mean, I love my siblings too, but come on guys.
What was the YA series about girls with terminal illnesses? Anybody?
And Erik is right, I should've said "girls (and certain Mercury Film Editors) only." I stand corrected.
I whole-heartedly second the need for a Sweet Valley High blog!
Lurlene McDaniel, author of "Six Months to Live" and "Don't Die, My Love". Christ, I remember those books. I totally thought I had leukemia for an entire summer after reading those. My parents were pissed!
Yeah! Thanks Marie, I've been trying to remember that for ages.
I bet I could recite the SVH intro from memory; dimples, sun bleached blonde hair, eyes the color of the Pacific, etc.
I also distinctly remember these lines, written by moody loner Olivia (who I believe had beautiful green eyes behind thick glasses, or some shit): "I'm on the outside, looking in/that's the way its always been." I'm pretty sure her angst was resolved by a makeover at the end of the book.
Oh, and remember the SV history books? I think there were two. They got all geneological and delved deep into the Wakefield family tree, trashy historical fiction style (star crossed lovers, etc). I liked those because they acknowledged that sex occurs, which I don't really recall the SVH books doing.
Ah, I was all about Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators and anything by John Bellairs.
House with a Clock in its Walls, anyone?
Yes! The SVH histories were awesome. You know what was not awesome? The TV show. I can't remember when it aired, but I know it was a couple of years after my SVH obsession had quieted to a mild addiction. It was terrible.
Also, remember Jessica's friend Lila? I hated her, and I can't even remember why except she was always a dick to Elizabeth.
For the SVH intro you forgot: perfect size 6, and for some reason it always mentioned that Elizabeth would wear a maillot swimsuit (which I always understood was a fancy term for one-piece) while Jessica would wear a skimpy bikini.
My god. My life is now complete.
Anyone hit up the Ann M. Martin signing at Cascade Plaza back in the day? God, that was my first rockstar moment. I got my Super Specials signed.
GEEKY.
i luv svh and bbsc!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Um, "girls only"? Not quite. I know plenty of guys who, at some point in mid-adolescence, c. late '80s-early '90s, maybe when they'd read all the other books in their house and they didn't have anything else to read and their annoying sisters left some of their girly, babysitting-centric books just laying around and there was nothing else to read plus those girls on these girly, babysitting-centric covers, let's just admit for a second, were semi-hot sometimes, I'm just saying some guys I know happened to read one or two or 20 Babysitters Club books.
I'M NOT ONE OF THEM. I'm just saying I know some guys who've read them. That's all. NOT ME.
P.S. Does anybody else miss Sweet Valley High?
