News Curfew Law Stirring Debate

Posted by Matt Davis on Wed, May 23 at 12:11 PM

Monday’s curfew law post has stirred controversy both here on the blog and in outdated discussions I’ve been having “in the real world,” with “real people,” too.

Amanda Fritz is the most recent to weigh in down in the comments, and Amanda, I promise to answer your question this afternnon, but in the meantime, Blogtown readers, why not provide your two-cents worth? Am I blowing concerns about this law out of proportion? I don’t think so.

As I think I might have indicated previously, on part of my opposition to and frustration with the curfew as a general policy is that I'm frustrated with a wider perspective on two counts: (1) Given the history with things like sit-lie and exclusions, I simply do not trust the city with these sorts of laws; (2) I'm tired of targeting certain populations with restrictions with next-to-no priority put on doing something FOR those populations rather than merely TO those populations.

Ohmigod we have homeless people in Portland! Let's hide them!

Ohmigos we have kids in Portland! Let's hide them!

When the city shows that they want to treat these populations as people, and not just as "problems", then and only then should they be afforded a debate on these Laws of Restriction.

When curfews are outlawed, only outlaws will have curfews.

Clearly you have been smoking doobies with Scott Moore, Dave.
