Drunk No More Drunk Driving!

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Thu, May 31 at 4:33 PM

You might have heard of a local outfit called Meteor, a company you’d call while totally drunk and stranded away from home, and Meteor would dispatch a sober driver on a folding scooter to save your butt. That person would drive you (and your car!) home, with their scooter hitching along in the trunk. It was a brilliant idea—and at $10 +$2.50/mile per ride, way the hell cheaper than a DUI. And no cab’s going to get your car home.

Now Meteor has morphed into RideOn—same concept, but now a non-profit. What’s that mean for you? A ride home is only $5.

The guys behind RideOn—Joshua Bernard and Scott Conger—are officially launching RideOn at Beulahland on June 12 at 6 pm. Go thank ‘em. (And maybe do a few shots, then demand a ride home!)

that sounds like a great service

When I was living in Vegas, we had a similar service, but 2 people would show up in 1 car and then the 2nd person would drive your car home with the 1st following. I called it for some friends of mine after a long long long night. They were super pissed at me the next morning because the people that do it are Christian Fundies and were trying to convert them the whole way home. This was 7 years ago and he still gives me grief about it.

In Denver they have the folding scooters setup in the middle of the nightclub area, so they are set and ready to go. They also have roving burrito vendors. They are light years ahead of us.

Why can't idle police officers do this too? We're already paying them. And for what? To prod homeless people with nightsticks? To congregate at the Fred Meyer parking lot?

They should also be equipped to sell cheap burritos at closing time.

Actually, a cab company will do it, but you have to hire two cabs and two drivers and pay for their ride back to their extra car. Not cheap, but possible.

Just wanted to clear up some things:
The event on the 12th at Beulahland is a forum for industry/civic folks and will probably only last an hour or so (6-8?).

On the 23rd of June, Slabtown will be hosting a fundraiser for RideOn featuring several local bands.

Both events, however, are directed toward raising awareness and funding for RideOn. But until those funds are raised, ride services cannot begin. So come out, drink, support your community, and have fun! But for now, leave your car behind!

I know that tri-met must be scared shitless of the liability involved, but maybe if the buses and trains rolled till 3am, less people would get behind the wheel at closing time.

I would like to support in any way I can. I think this is an AMAZING company. I have Lovecraft Biofuels in Portland and LA. I missed the meeting last night but would love to get in touch. Is there a phone #? Thanks!
