Portland Oregon Is Extremely Average

Posted by Matt Davis on Sat, May 19 at 12:29 PM

ranking only behind Illinois in the entire nation, in averageness terms! In an effort to disprove this, however, I am posting a distinctly blurry photograph of this 1 in 2.5million Royal Flush attained last night at a poker game in St.Johns. Incredible:royalflush.jpgROYAL FLUSH: 1 in 2.598 million chance.

Was this hand dealt to you Matt?
Just curious.

that looks like a ladies hands, very delicate

The hand was dealt to a young lady. Those are her hands, not mine...she had the Ace and 10 of Diamonds, the Jack, Queen of Diamonds came on the flop, and then the King of Diamonds came on the turn.

I should pair you guys up with Bret Maverick.

did her opponents not find the dude photographing her hand a little disconcerting?

the hand is obviously over so i doubt her oppenents care. and the odds are 1 in 649,739. big deal.

case in point...see above.

Negative negative negative! The one in 600,000 number depends on which website you're visiting:

Technically, of course, if you're after a Royal Flush in Diamonds, it's 1 in 2.5 million. But if you're after any Royal Flush, it's one in 600,000. Still, you're telling me that's "average?"

how can correct odds depend on which website you are visiting? they're odds, not opinions. and since you don't have the lady hands in this story you are actually talking about the odds of seeing a RF, not actually getting one, so divide 649,739 by number of players and then again by number of hands played.

and the odds are greatly improved when you combine a new deck of cards with amatuer dealers doing the shuffling. when almost every other card that comes off is the one you need for your hand (kind of like how your comment #3 above reads). so yeah, big deal.

>>>: you seem a little jaded. Do you, by any chance, play a lot of poker? I've only been playing for about a year and didn't ever expect to see a Royal Flush. So yeah, it IS a big deal, to me.

I've been really enjoying playing more poker and reading about it, especially because the people you meet doing it are generally pretty positive and excited when good things happen at the table.

But then I'm optimistic by nature. I'm sorry if seeing these cards reminded you of a bad beat you took in a tournament in the '70s!

Perhaps we should have a game some time?

sorry if raining on your factually challenged statements makes me sound jaded. or like...an old guy? like someone from the 70s? ouch.

i'm just playing media matters to your fox news. and by big deal i mean those are some big cards that were dealt - what did you think i meant?

>>>: I really enjoy it when you "rain" on me. There's no need to apologize. Although that's the first time I've ever been compared to Fox News, and am now off out directly, for a beer to celebrate. Cheers!
