The World’s Most Famous Intern…

Posted by The Unpaid Intern on Mon, May 7 at 10:07 AM

wi20010325_MonicaLewinsky_Vespa_161700.jpgWhen I’ve told friends about my quest, as an unpaid intern, to find the world’s most famous intern, Monica Lewinsky, and find out if she has in fact moved to Portland; it’s always followed with comments like, ‘Are you going to ask her where she gets her dry cleaning done?’ or ‘You going to offer her a cigar?’

But recently when I told a friend about my mission, she said, “Oh yeah, she hangs out at Urban Grind in the Pearl.” A quick call to Urban Grind confirms that Miss Lewinsky has been frequenting the establishment.

Now enter your jokes about what type of drink she orders. Here are a few of Matt Davis’ comments when I told him. “What does she order? Tall creamy latte? Spunky americano?” I love how the mere mentioning of the name Monica Lewinsky will instantly turn any conversation into a dirty joke telling contest.

Monica, give me a call, 503-294-0840, or email me at newsintern@portlandmercury.com. I just want to chat, I promise no bad jokes!

Comments

To be fair, "spunky Americano" was dire, dire, dire.

Matt, the spunky Americano was a cheap shot because deep down you hate how free American's truly are. You don't see any sexual scandals like this plaguing the good old United Kingdom do you? Your country may be free, but the good old U.S. of A is just more free- it's a fact, look it up!

On the contrary my old chap. Sex scandals are a point of pride in British politics.

Ever heard of John Profumo? David Mellor? Edwina Currie?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_political_scandals

Then of course there's Hugh Grant, although I'm not sure he counts because it happened in America.

Whoopty-do... So some English people had sex and got caught. Here in the states we have oral sex on the clock and then lie about it, that's how free we are. Our President's can also start wars based on rumors and instead of getting impeached, they get reelected. That my friend, is the true definition of freedom!

Guys, leave the poor girl alone. She made a colossal mistake when she was young and (very) stupid, but I would bet she was pretty emotionally wounded at the time. God forbid we should all be hounded for the rest of our lives for stupid shit we did out of emotional pain when we were in our teens and early 20s. We'd run out of hounds.

Usually, if we're lucky and get some self-awareness, we hound ourselves as we get older over the stupid shit we did. And if we're *really* lucky, we can even get over it at some point before we die. I'm working on it.

Monica, call me and we'll talk tote bags. If you knit, you can come to our knitting circle and we'd even treat you like a normal person.

Lynn: This is MONICA LEWINSKY. Her moving to Portland is absolutely in the public interest. Your implication that it is "none of our business" undermines everything good about tabloid journalism.

Frankly, I am APPALLED that none of the major news channels has got a camera down there yet.

Again: this is MONICA LEWINSKY. In PORTLAND!

What hope is there?

I am absolutely thrilled with the Mercury's rep as trashy tabloid journalism. What I'm not thrilled about is people making unfunny, bullshit jokes that weren't even all that funny in the '90s. If you're going to be sexistand god knows, no one here is going to stop youat least be funny about it.
Otherwise you're just another boring Portland douchebag, and the rest of us are embarrassed by you.

Consider me back in my box for the afternoon. Sorry Steve.

Hey, no need for shame, I was the one who broke the Monica story in the first place, and I knew the type of reactions we would get. Her arrival is interesting and fun watercooler talk. But when it comes to pursuing a story about her that hinges solely on her past indiscretions? You won't read that in my paper. It smacks of school yard sexism, that doesn't just demean the victim, its a clear and demoralizing message to any woman in earshot who chooses to follow her own path (right or wrong). If Monica gets into any trouble here in Portland (or Marjorie wants to review her handbags), that's okay by me, and we'll pursue the story. But if any paper in townincluding the Mercuryasks her to recount her past mistakes for the billionth time, she should answer with a resounding "Fuck Off."

I hope nobody ever asks me to recount my past mistakes. Blimey. 8,000 miles and I still fear that phone call...

to answer the question of what she drinks...it's a quad grande latte. yea, from starbucks.

Starbucks? Starbucks? She chooses Starbucks over all of the great PORTLAND coffee shops? Now that's a real news story!

Where does she stand on charter reform?

Ladies and Gentlemen Monica has left the Pearl and Portland. Nothing more to see here so move along.

Humpy, I knew I loved you for a reason.

Lynn, You should know the Monica spent most of her waiting time during the hearing knitting...that was a lot of knitting. I liked Humphrey's post too.

I like, and agree with Steve's comment too... Although it may have seemed like it, I wasn't asking everyone to chime in with their Monica jokes, I was just trying to insinuate that's what happens every time her name is brought up (at least 90 percent of the time).

The thing is, I know what she's famous/infamous for... Everybody does. Without those actions, there would be no story about her moving/visiting here. So its hard for people to comment or write about her without talking about her actions, which usually results in crude humor... Let's face it, no matter how great her handbags are, she'll never be known as the women who started a handbag company.

In the end I think we can all agree, we have beaten the dead horse...

What?

She and Tonya Harding should box.

"But if any paper in townincluding the Mercuryasks her to recount her past mistakes for the billionth time, she should answer with a resounding "Fuck Off."

That's the part I agree with Matt, I'm just saying I never really thought it was news to begin with... Some people do and that's fine too.

Like I said before, there's a reason she's a household name, and I don't think you can talk about her wihtout talking about those incidents. Some crack jokes, other want to talk handbags, my response when I found out she was here, "who cares."

Why don't the people who work at the mercury just walk across the hall to talk to each other?

It's called "transparency." Or as it's also sometimes known, "boring." But, you buy yer ticket and you take yer chances!

Well, it was Steven's story, and he got his answer. She's here or was here in Portland. And now that he's bored with it, thank God, let's move on to more pressing issues... Like liquid hand soap. Is it superior to its predecessor the bar of soap?

Who is Monica Lewinsky?

Does Monica still suck?
