Film Van Sant Wins “Special 60th Anniversary Prize” at Cannes.

scaled.vansantmug1.jpgFunny story: Just because he lives here, we’re pretty much obligated to put up every bit of news that in any way, shape, or form relates to Gus Van Sant. Sigh. (That said, nice work, Gus.)

US director Van Sant wins special Cannes’ 60th prize

CANNES, France, May 27, 2007 (AFP) - US director Gus Van Sant on Sunday won this year’s extra-special 60th anniversary prize for his film on a teenage skate-boarder’s dark secret, “Paranoid Park”.

Portraying young Americans is “a calling”, the director said at Cannes, and the teenage hero of his newest movie — in Van Sant tradition a first-time actor — is in deep trouble after accidentally causing a man to be sliced in two.

Is that his mug shot? Classy.

Good for GVS! That guy is the real deal, making challenging, artistic films in this era of Pirates of the Carribean III. Once you get in the zone (i.e. ready to let a film so some slow work on your brain), those recent films can be quite amazing. OK—I still haven't sat through Gerry without use of the fast forward button, but Last Days was tremendously powerful, I thought. I think it's great he got this weird award.

Yeah, he's fine, and good for him and his weird award. I don't have anything against the guy; I just don't think his films are all that impressive, either. And this is just kind of exacerbated by people in Portland acting like he's the be-all end-all contemporary cinema auteur, which is fairly annoying.

To my eye, he gets less credit in Portland than in most other places, as people here do the old "blase about the local celeb" thing, rather than really engaging with his movies. Usually whenever I hear people here talk about him, it's with an eyeroll (unless it's it's an always-gushy souce, like Portland Monthly or celeb-fucky Style pages). I find that people usually take the opposite tact, showing that they refuse to be impressed (yeah right) by celebrity, and gloss over a pretty amazing (and long) career. (I certainly know that happens around the office when his name is brought up. Am I right?)

Trust me, Chas. I'm really overrated.

I heard that Gus van Sant got the unknown actors via advertising in "myspace" under "Paranoid Park".
