Politics What Would Jesus Smoke?

Posted by Scott Moore on Fri, May 11 at 12:22 PM

Every once in a while, one of our stories somehow finds a national audience, and we start getting deluged with emails from around the country. Normally, this happens when we criticize some crappy band that all the mall-going emo kids love, or when we advocate for humane treatment of circus elephants, or when one of us decides to kill a sheep and write about it.

This, though, might be my favorite out-of-town letter of all time, if only for the potentially incorrect use of the adjective “luciferous”:

Dear Editor of the Portland Mercury,

It’s time America stop persecuting responsible adult cannabis (kaneh bosm / marijuana) users (Buzz Kill, May 10, 2007). A large growing percentage of citizens consider American cannabis laws irrational, anti-Christian and luciferous. One reason to stop persecuting humans for using the God-given plant cannabis that doesn‘t get mentioned is because it‘s Biblically correct since Christ God Our Father (The Ecologician) indicates He created all the seed-bearing plants, saying they are all good, on literally the very first page. The only Biblical restriction placed on cannabis is that it is to be accepted with thankfulness (see 1 Timothy 4:1-5).

Truthfully,

Stan White

It’s true, man. Even Jesus used pot. I read it on the internet.

this guy should spend a day following around a heroin junkie, and see if he feels that ALL plants, including poppy plants, are jesus-approved. hang out with them while they over-dose in a coffee shop and hit their head on a table and the cops and paramedics show up, hang out with them while they post an ad on craigslist offering their body for $200 an hour and some disgusting, morbidly obese man crawling with STDs squirms all over them for 20 minutes. etc.

and that's coming from someone who has a girlfriend with cancer who weed has been a god-send for.

I think that... Damn, I forgot what I was going to say. Sorry, I have a horrible short-term memory. It must have been all those years of inhaling God's plants.

Again, Lyle, you know how to say all the right things to brighten my day.

That's what I can't stand about the marijuana boosters, it's not enough to say that prohibition is unenforceable, inequitable and largely counterproductive to it's stated goal. No, the booster has to point out the benefits of the substance, a miracle product that will seemingly cure the world's ill's, a fountain of creativity and well being. I hate these people. I use and abuse my drugs of choice but I am not deluding myself or trying to delude others of their "benefits", or claim a divine support for the usage of those drugs.

Why can't we be satisfied that all things have pros and cons? Too much of a good thing can be bad too. If a person is obsessed with Jesus and their Christian life, it can be equally bad. If a person is obsessed with their time in the army and all things military, they might not be the best person to have in power. Too much alcohol? Ditto. Too much reading and not enough exercise (or vice versa? Ditto.

Weed is ok, just don't over-do it. DUH.

Seems like our Colorado friend has been watching too much of the prime local cable access prognosticator Dr. Ben Abraham.
