In what promises to be one of the more adorable First Thursday happenings, Pete Jordan, author of Dishwasher Zine and Dishwasher: One Man’s Quest to Wash Dishes in All Fifty States will be at the Independent Publishing Resource Center tonight, reading from the newest issue of his ‘zine, showing off his collection of Mac & Cheese boxes, and hosting a mac & cheese bake-off. Chas interviewed him last week; Pete has quit more than 80 dishwashing jobs, and my favorite part of the interview is his story about hiding dirty dishes all over the kitchen of a particularly asshole chef, before quitting. Talk about living the dream. (Well, the underpaid service industry dream, anyway.)

Regarding the image you chose for this post: he told me today that he doesn't collect Kraft boxes. So your image is wrong. He's just not into their mac. Plus, collecting them would probably knock his collection out of proportion (or whatever?), since Kraft makes so many limited-run boxes to go with various product tie-ins. Still, I really like the Kraft covers, especially the ones that feature portraits of regular eaters like you and me. Well, kidlike you and me's. I'm always thinking about how exciting it would be to be a kid, and as a kid to express my love of Kraft mac by sending them something or other that tells them why I am cool and why I love mac and why loving mac probably helps make me cool, and then, as a result, to be rewarded for all that with my own face on the box cover!

But I'm here to report that Mac 'n Cheese box collection is absolutely wonderful. I'm going back to Reading Frenzy tomorrow just to stare at it. (I hope it stays up; I didn't ask about that.) It's the best thing I saw all night.
