Politics In 25 Hours…

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Mon, Jun 25 at 5:17 PM

…please join us at rontoms at 7 pm—at 6th and Burnside—for the inaugural Debate Club!

This month, we’re turning our beer goggles on immigration, with a panel of folks who’ve got plenty to say, including:

Kayse Jama, of the Center for Intercultural Organizing
Prof. José Padín, PSU’s Director of Chicano Latino Studies, who’s also done research on media and race.
• Romeo Sosa of VOZ, the day laborers’ group (who held a press conference this morning, praising Tom Potter for speaking out against the ICE raid at the Del Monte plant a few weeks ago).
• Aeryca Steinbauer from CAUSA, Oregon’s Immigrant Rights Coalition

Better yet, you can brush up on your Spanish—Dan Denvir of the Portland Central America Solidarity Committee will be on hand to translate English to Spanish y de español al inglés.

Moderator Scott Moore is working up tough questions for the panel. And as always, we’ll have an abundant supply of 3x5 cards for you to scribble your own—at the last two Mercury-Bus Project events, audience members outdid the moderators with their thoughtful and weighty questions, and I don’t doubt tomorrow night will run the same way. See you there!

How is it a debate if all your speakers take a similar position?

I hear you. Frankly, inviting Oregonians for Immigration Reform was off the table from the get-go; Their rhetoric is so offensively inflammatory, we wouldn't have had any other panelists.

We had hoped to get a state rep or senator to outline the Oregon GOP's immigration platform, but they're tied up in Salem. The Oregon GOP itself hasn't gotten back to us.

If you've got any other suggestions of someone with a different position, please let us know. Otherwise, we're armed with the GOP platform, and OFIR's "SUMMARY OF ARGUMENTS AGAINST INCREASED IMMIGRATION" ("12. Creates surplus labor pool to support anti union employers.") and "SPECIAL PROBLEMS CREATED BY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS" ("13. Lowers our moral and civic values by encouraging disregard for the law.") to lob at the panelists.

Plus, we encourage the audience—no matter where you're at on the issue—to ask away, and challenge the panel.

Plus we don't really want to sit in a bar with those OFIR wankers.

Oops, did I just say that? I think I might have...

Agreed, wacko anti immigration types are no fun. Ironically, Republican politicians are for unlimited illegal immigration, because their campaign financing comes from businesses which want direct cheap labor, or the downward pressure on legal wages that illegal wages cause. It's the rank and file poor Republicans who are worried about illegal immigration. Better planning next time.

You could see if Linda Flores is available.

In theory she's supposed to represent part of Clackamas County so its not exactly a stretch that some of her constituents might be interested in seeing her speak up at something like this.

damn, i was kinda hoping this debate club thing was gonna be more like an informal debate between whoever showed up, taking sides, and arguing purely for the love of rhetoric and logic (and alcohol). this seems rather like a younger, hipper, drunker city club @ rontoms, which is still cool, and worth checking out, but not as cool as real debate geekery.

Hey Pet Cow, the idea is that that's what will happens afterward, although it's largely up to you. The first hour with our panel should give you plenty to debate about from 8:00 on. We'll be encouraging every one to stick around to keep the rhetorical juices--and booze--flowing. Which is drastically UNlike the city club.

Ooooh! That's a pretty ad!

cool, thanks for writing back, scott. can't make it tonight anyway, but i'm looking forward to drunken debate in the future.

you know what would be cool? sometime before primary 2008 starts, have a pimp your candidate debate, so we can watch the obama/edwards partisans tear each others heads off while the hillary fans just stay out of the way.

just a thought...
