« New Episode of So Hot Right Now! | Main | Good Morning, News! »
So it seems to be media afternoon in Portland. I’m up in Albina at a meeting of the mayor’s racial profiling committee, and the facilitator, Kristin Lensen, just proposed closing the next two sessions to the media, for the purpose of “relationship building” between the committee’s participants.
Fortunately, they went around the table and agreed not to try to do it, (it also happens to be against Oregon public meetings law) although the mayor’s public safety policy assistant, Jared Spencer, said this:”I believe in the freedom of the press but I’ve seen recently the damage that the media can have in propagating overall untruths and inaccuracies which can be communicated to the broader public.”
I think that’s his way of saying “The Mercury killed our sit/lie ordinance.”
Anyway, Police Union Boss Robert King said: “I like Matt, I want you to stay.”
I’ll let that sentence stand on its own, I think, because I sure as hell don’t know how to respond to it.
Then Police Chief, Rosie Sizer said: “I think I’m one of the people around the table with the most to lose in terms of having skin in the game. I think there’s been a certain amount of posturing that’s happened partly because of the presence of Matt. On the other hand he’s still interested, and he’s also keeping Portland safe from duct-tape.”
I am, and have been, the only “journalist”/member of the press in the room at the last six meetings of the mayor’s racial profiling committee. I responded to the comments by saying something along the lines of: “Our paper is an alternative weekly and we don’t claim to be objective. On the other hand every journalist has their stance, and if the Oregonian chooses not to be interested in a particular story, that’s their own form of bias.”
That goes for the Tribune and the WWierdos, too. I also mentioned that little “public meetings law” thing, and everybody had a good chuckle. What a thoroughly odd exchange…
Thanks, Lynn! Sadly it only lasts as long as the battery in the News Team Laptop(TM), circa 2004, but we're trying our best...
"Skin in the game" was an unfortunate/hilarious choice of words for the Chief to choose, don't you think?
And yes: have any of the other weeklies/the one daily given some sort of explanation why they don't officially give a shit about this process?
Good work, Matt! Thank you for attending these meetings. How odd that the suggestion of excluding the media was not immediately tossed by someone saying, "Even if we wanted to, that's illegal."
Funny, there's this little bit from the mayor's visionpdx "booklet," which outlines what is important to Portlanders:
Accountability and Leadership: We value transparent and fair processes. We value decision-makers who are connected to the community and consider the common good when making choices. We value leaders who inspire others to act towards a common goal.
Maybe Jared should read the report from his boss's primary project?
Oh, and "I believe in the freedom of the press but..." may be among the most dangerous phrases in the English language.
Scott: I know. It was, as I wrote, an odd exchange. Having said that, I'm glad it happened, because I feel like Spencer's views on the media offer some real insights into how the mayor's office really feels about the work of its committees: involve the public, just, well, don't involve them too much.
Spencer's boss, the mayor's public safety policy manager, Maria Rubio, was also absent from the meeting again. Due to "plagiarism-gate" back at the office, I arrived ten minutes late, but Rubio's absence was not explained while I was in the room.
Richbachelor: Over the last year I've mentioned how interesting the racial profiling committee meetings are to several other reporters in town, and asked them why they don't come down and follow along. I've never heard a response I understood, but I do think the work of the committee is helped, not hindered, by sensitive media interest.
didn't we lose our last police chief 'cause he had too much skin in the game?
Your use of the term "skin" is interesting, because while you mean it as in "skin flick," I think, Former Chief Derrick Foxworth's race is cited in his lawsuit against the city, alleging his demotion would not have happened if he had been white. I wonder how that's going, actually. Better check up on it...
Incidentally I'd never heard the term "skin in the game" before coming to this country. But it seems to be used fairly often. Is it management-speak? What's the deal?
Ancora desidero colpirlo nella testa con uno sfera della neve.
I've just run that through a translator, and it apparently means this in Italian:
"Still I wish to hit it in the head with one sphere of the snow."
And now, I've figured it out, it's Commissioner Randy Leonard (CRL), blogging from his vacation in Rome! Fight them on the beaches, Randy! Good to hear from you.
Actually, we are in Assisi. Very beautiful and wonderful history. We will be in Rome next week.
My mistake. Say "buon giorno" to the statue of St.Francis from me—I'm not a Catholic but he's one of my favorite saints, mainly because of his trust fund.
St. Francis was born at Assisi in 1182. After a care free youth, he turned his back on inherited wealth and committed himself to God. Like many early saints, he lived a very simple life of poverty, and in so doing, gained a reputation of being the friend of animals.
Enjoy Rome, too. Rome in June=fantastic!
I can do better than saying Hi to the stature, Matt. We actually visited St. Francis's tomb yesterday...it was really humbling...a beautiful church (actually two, one over another) that was constructed in his honor shortly after his death. There is some irony to the grandeur of his final resting place given, as you point out the life St.Francis led. As much as we may enjoy it, I am quite sure he would not approve.
Pardon me, but what was it Randy wanted to hit with a snowball?
The skull of Matt Davis.
