Tapegate continues—KATU’s top story on the web today is on the Rose Festival tape.
A Portland city officials has stoked the controversy by calling for a ban, and a local paper is calling on citizens to pull up tape and steal lawn chairs.
Unfortunately, KATU refers to our call for a Civic Clean-Up Squad as an ad in the video, when it’s clearly a column, but at least they’re helping promote the revolution.
Take back the streets! Meet us tonight at the Convention Center MAX stop (NE MLK and Holladay) at 7:45—look for the people wearing reflective safety vests!
D'oh! Yes—NE MLK and Holladay. Convention Center stop. Fixed.
do you have extra vests? i don't have one.
Yeah, I don't have a vest either. Are steel toed boots required or just a suggestion?
Just wear something that means you're not going to get run over.
I can't get a Mercury around Monty Park anymore but I wanted to come the blog and graciously thank you for doing this. As young as 6 years old I remember seeing that tape around town and thinking "wow, these people are dumbshits"
I can't make it tonight because I am lazy but if I hit that perfect peak of stoned where I feel like creating mayhem, I might come on out.
In any case, best of luck, godspeed, and bless you in your noble quest tonight.
Might I suggest Kevlar? Some of those people are going to be a little less than happy. Y'all be careful out there.
P.S. Oh yeah there's a shit-load by the Convention Center, I drove past there last night on my commute - I will again this evening. Some people had the audacity to write stuff like "Martha + Kevin =
please upload videos!!!
i would recommend wearing helmets and pads. this has gotten too much press for there not to be some jackasses out there to kick your butts.
godspeed.
HALP! COMPUTAR!
After this whole Tapegate thing, I was waiting to cross MLK yesterday and just thought I'd pull up a little tape while I was waiting.
IT FELT GREAT!!!!
And then I saw a guy pulling up tape on NE Broadway this morning and gave him a big right on.
See you tonight!
This is my first Rose Festival and ripping up tape is the only thing that remotely excites me about this weekend.
YOU GUYS are the fascists! Why don't you pick on douche bag, hipster punks littering the ground with cigarette butts and vomit? If you pick up my tape me and my three brothers (yes..we live in Gresham you elitist, obnoxious Willamette Week-wannabees) will kick your asses so hard you'll crap sideways.
I'm a disabled senior citizen who just spent the morning cleaning the streets if Portland of strange duct tape grafitti off of our streets. I collected about 50 pounds of tape in three hours time. I was greetd with honking, thumbs up and "atta boy" by most Portlanders. My morning of civic duty was marred by threats of violence by dedicated litterers. When the mouth breathers come to town things really get nasty.
Remember the immortal words of that mid-century poet, Little Richard, "I'm Gonna Rip It Up!"

Good luck, be safe. I would totally be there to help if I wasn't living in NYC. Take care of Amy R., we go way back.
Marcus, I applaud your postmodernist take on this whole thing. At least, I assume you were joking. Because otherwise ... um, hmm.
Two points about making threats over the internet: (1) Yes, it's illegal. (2) But, it makes you sound very manly. Only the truly brave threaten people by filling in HTML forms.
Oh, and (3) resorting to threats of violence in order to enforce your own opinion probably isn't the best way to counter charges of being a "fascist". Just sayin'.
Maybe if they promise not to litter the ground with cigs and vomit while they're out there, Marcus and his three brothers won't beat them up. Here's hoping.
I have lived here for more than 10 years but never went to the parade cuz of all the reserved spots -- figured I couldn't see anything without camping out for 2 days. Maybe this year I will try to attend. Thanks for challenging the tape & save folks. No place else does this.
Hell yeah to the Merc.
I will do my best to be there!

Lloyd Center? Or Convention Center? I doubt you'll find much parade tape near Lloyd Center...
