Media WW-Gate

Posted by Matt Davis on Tue, Jun 19 at 11:26 AM

We know how uncomfortable some Blogtown readers get when we write nasty things about the Willamette Week. And I’m sorry. Truly, insincerely sorry to bother you with this. But we’ve got three things to say:

1.W-WRONG!!! Last Friday Pulitzer winner and WW reporter Nigel Jaquiss posted a story (download an archived version as a jpg here) alleging Senator Betsy Johnson pushed through changes to rural airports because her husband’s business in Scapoose would benefit from the changes. It says Bandon Dunes is served by Brookings airport. The trouble is, Jaquiss, whose reputation is already being torn to bits elsewhere (and originally, here, by one of his prospective interns(!)) for his coverage of the Johnson story, appears to have forgotten to check his facts: Brookings is more than 100 miles South of Bandon Dunes. Today, all you’ll see is a post saying “WW erred.”

2.W-WRONGER!!! The WW used this “stock shot” of some Zoobombers in its annual Finder guide with the caption “Pride,” except the shot wasn’t taken at Pride, and as far as we know, the ‘bombers pictured weren’t actually gay. They also point out that their flags were not gay pride flags.socalledpride.jpg

3.W-WRONGEST!!! It’s rumored (sources say…etcetera etcetera) that WW publisher Richard Meeker was a driving force behind the paper’s anti-tram coverage in the run-up to its being built. This may have had something to do with the fact that Meeker lives on a street that runs right underneath Portland’s silver goddesses.

However Meeker, with a publisher’s keen sense for turning lemons into lemonade, agreed to allow Widmer Brothers to plaster a huge beer ad on the roof of his house on Saturday night, after Widmer supplied the booze at the evening’s WW-hosted tram party, which was attended by a national audience of convention-goers from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies (AAN).

I bumped into Meeker last Thursday night, while crashing a party (and drinking delicious, free, Widmer beer) hosted by the WW at the Portland Art Museum. “So, you’re the one who wants to take pictures of my house?” he askedblowing our plans to spring an undercover photographic mission on him without warning. It seems the Widmer promotions people put him onto us after we called up last Tuesday asking “when might be a good time to take a picture?”

We didn’t get a photo in the end, but sources have confirmed they saw the banner on Meeker’s house. Some people have accused Meeker of being a “sell-out.” However, we think he’s discovered a revolutionary new way to recoup lost advertising revenue, and as such, Mercury editor Wm. Steven Humphrey will be covering his roof with a 1000sq.ft Hormel’s Chili ad, as soon as possible.

Thanks for bearing with us. I feel much better now.

In honour of your admirable quest for accuracy, I must point out that it's JAQUISS.

My bad on the Zoobombers photo. Can't speak to the rest of it. Cheerio!

Just checking you're reading, Dundas. I've made the changes. Incidentally, you might like to change this one of your own:

http://www.wweek.com/author/?author=NIGEL%20JACQUISS

It's an alt-weekly slapfight!

It's a bummer when you use you're instead of your when you're burning someone for not checking their reading

Especially when it's the correct usage. Absolutely.

OH SHIT!

This is like that old thing I read in BOY'S LIFE where a teacher calls on a kid and the kid starts saying "I is" and the teacher interruputs and says "don't say 'I is.' Say 'I am'" and the kid says "okay. I am the ninth letter of the alphabet."

Davis 1, grammar police 0

That's more like it.

Just for the record all Zoobombers are gay!

Truly, insincerely sorry

Hilarious.

Shame on WW for being so out of touch with Portland's counter-culture that they mistake a shot from the Minibike Winter Olympics Post Apocalyptic Deathmatch Chariot Wars with Gay Pride. Well they're ALMOST the same.

That's my neon yellow bike on the left in the photo and it is SO not gay. Thanks WWeek you fags!

Josh

"I bumped into Meeker last Thursday night, while crashing a party (and drinking delicious, free, Widmer beer) hosted by the WW at the Portland Art Museum."

In case any of you are thrown by Matt's odd British lingo, here's a translation:

"bumped" = When I introduced you to publisher Richard Meeker as he passed by.

"crashed" = Invited you to come along to the party after you were kind enough to join us for Thursday's Food Panel and assured you that not having an AAN badge would not be a problem.

Hope you had a great weekend, Merc staff, we enjoyed your party Saturday night.

Ouch, that stings, Kelly. That really, really stings...

Kelly, you mean the party on Friday night, not Saturday. You guys can't get anything right, huh?

Touch!

ZZzZzZZZZzzzzzzzzzzZZZzzz....

wwwWWWWWWwwwwwwWWWWWWWwww...

No one is discussing the HUGE AD on Richard's roof. It was AWESOME. We sold SO MUCH BEER after we put that GARGANTUAN AD on MEEKER'S HOUSE. Plus, everyone who was in town for AAN is now converted to Widmer and Widmer alone. Because we put an ad on MEEKER'S HUGE ASS HOUSE. We did donate all the beer for the AAN festivities, so the ad on RICHARD'S HOUSE was FREE. He even let us crash on his couch. Shameless? Sell-out? No way. That's called good business in my book.

We have no way of proving the above commenter is Kurt Widmer. So we have no way of proving its factual accuracy. Indeed, we're pretty wary of its factual accuracy. Just so that's clear.

You kids play nice now.

Yeah, sheesh WW! I always fly to North Bend when I golf at Bandon Dunes.

coming from the merc and its busse-proud/humphreys-loud tradition, i'm not sure how much of this to believe. so i'll believe none.

Good for you, Bob. You're a champ.

I think if Bob took the time to get to know me, he would actually find me to be quite soft-spoken.

I know! It's like Bob's got this stereotype in his head that says "alt-weekly editor," and he can't see past it. This is all so deeply painful and hurtful, on so many levels. [cries]

Ooo, let's make t-shirts!

The Mercury: Busse Loud and Humphrey Proud!

(Never mind that Busse hasn't worked here for nearly two years.)

Amy-

What if they said Ruiz loud and Humphrey proud?

Cuz I'd TOTALLY buy one. (:

Jesus you guys, just organize an alt-weekly softball game, and be done with it. Or bowling. Or ping pong. Or lawn darts. Or whatevs.

I think I tie with Scott for "least loud" in the news room. :)

Dave

The Mercury-WW softball DEATH MATCH is already scheduled for July 8. See you there!

Next thing you know someone will be hitting us with the "immature" stereotype. Saying posts of this nature are "childish." To that person I preemptively say, "poop to you!"

Well I know "The Butcher" has a mouth on him...Davis loud Humphrey proud? (:

Busse may have been gone for two years, but like stinkpalm, you're never going to get the smell off.

Similar to the smell of West Hills self righteousness.

Childish, but so cool. Thanks for the poop.

Waitasecond I don't understand the term "stinkpalm." Do you mean "stinkfinger"? I've put my finger up Busse's butt, but never my palm. Nevertheless, I don't mind the smell of Busse's butt, because it smells like orange sherbet.

Cor blimey.

Isn't "your" the correct spelling?

Good one Jim. You literalist, you. I luv ya.

Re: stinkpalm

Or, just go watch Mallrats, if you can stand it.

I didn't know that Phil Busse's butt smelled like orange sherbet. That brings him up a nacho in my book.

Stinkfinger is my favorite Bond movie.
