Music Best Albums of ‘07?

Posted by Chas Bowie on Tue, Jul 17 at 1:59 PM

With Ezra’s recent talk of his favorite CDs of the year so far, and the fact that we just passed ‘07’s halfway mark, it’s got me thinking about my own list of the year’s best albums. People who know me can attest to the fact that I’m half-OCD about ranking my favorite cultural enterprises. I’m never at a loss for a “favorite” anything, and can usually get really wonky by busting out my 6th or 9th favorite albums of all time, or documentary films, or whatever. So after six months and 17 days of deliberation, here are my top five albums of 2007 thus far.

1. Double Up—R. Kelly
2. With Lasers—Bonde Do Role
3. Da Drought 3—Li’l Wayne (ties with Li’l Weezyana and None Higher, also by Wayne)
4. Waiting to Inhale—Devin the Dude
5. 23—Blonde Redhead

So let’s hear it Blog Town readers. Give us your top 5. Participate in the geekdom. (Or make fun of my choices. Whichever.)

Comments

1. Electrelane- No Shouts, No Calls
2. The Twilight Sad- Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters
3. A Sunny Day in Glasgow- Scribble Mural Comic Journal/Tout New Age EP
4. Panda Bear- Person Pitch
5. Los Campesinos!- Sticking Fingers into Sockets EP

Notables: The Besnard Lakes, Arbouretum, Caribou, Bishop Allen

1. lil wayne - da drought 3
2. wooden wand - james and the quiet
3. blues control - puff
4. marnie stern - in advance of the broken arm
5. r. kelly - double up

actually i rethought it...
1. excepter - tank tapes
2. lil wayne - da drought 3
3. wooden wand - james and the quiet
4. blues control - puff
5. neil young - live at massy hall

Stars of the Lid-And their Refinement of the Decline
Electrelane-No Shouts, No Calls
LCD Soundsystem-Sound of Silver
Panda Bear-person pitch
Papercuts-Can't Go Back

That Li'l Wayne album is pretty awesome as well...
also the new mnonmena and blitzen/trapper records were great, too.

Oh shit, I keep thinking Menomena was late '06. Revision:

1. Kells
2. Menomena
3. Bonde do Role
4. Lil Wayne
5. Devin
(6=Blonde Redhead, 7=Electrelane)

New Pornographers--Challengers
Animal Collective--Strawberry Jam
Panda Bear--Person Pitch
Shellac--Excellent Italian Greyhound
Copy--Bone Thugs Remixes

I'll refrain from making fun of your choices, Chas, if only to encourage others to give me my own leeway....

No order of importance:

1- The National: Boxer
2- Avett Brothers: Emotionalism
3- Bill Callahan: Woke On a Whaleheart
4- Menomena- Friend & Foe
5- Wilco: Sky Blue Sky
(Arcade Fire- Neon Bible)

Plenty other instances of musical wonder so far, just not as cohesive albums.

The White Stripes - Icky Thump
Arthur & Yu - In Camera
Eliott Smith - New Moon
Bjork - Volta
Blitzen Trapper - Wild Mountain Nation

Battles, Dan Deacon, Menomena, Panda Bear

I dunno, those are the only ones that immediately jump to mind for me. I want to put Electrelane on there, but I haven't gotten it yet for no good reason. I (and seemingly I alone) am also really, really into the new Architecture in Helsinki album, but that's not out yet, so whatever.

Quite a year so far! I'll take a stab:

1) Menomena - Friend & Foe
2) Panda Bear - Person Pitch
3) Evolutionary Jass Band - What's Lost
4) Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
5) Dan Deacon - Spiderman of the Ringers
6) Marnie Stern - In Advance of the Arm
7) Battles - Mirrored
8) Au - Au
9) Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity
10) Panther - Secret Lawns
11) Deerhunter - Cryptograms
12) YACHT - I Believe In You. Your Magic Is Real.

1) JUSTICE - Cross
2) Blonde Redhead - 23
3) Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
4) Ratatat - Remixes Vol II
5) Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity

I don't know if they're all top 10ers, but I've been digging Icky Thump, Neon Bible, the new Pharroe Monch, Lifesavas-Gutterfly, and the new QOTSA-Era Vulgaris.
