Finally made it up the street to Dove Vivi (2727 NE Glisan), a new pizza place in the space formerly occupied by Kustom Pizza. I had an intense aversion to Kustom, due both to their gross-out heat lamp pizza and to my general disapproval of K-for-C substitutions in business names (WHY!)—but fortunately, the only resemblance that Dove Vivi bears to Kustom is that they both serve(d) something that can be broadly defined as “pizza.”
There’s a lot of pizza on that strip already, of course—Ken’s Artisan, Stark Naked, Pizzicato. Dove Vivi distinguishes itself with a hook: their pizza is made with a dense, crunchy cornmeal crust, for a more deep-dish style pie that requires a knife and a fork and is almost more reminiscent of a savory tart than what I think of as pizza. I tried a slice with fresh corn, marinated onions, mozzarella, and chives, and a few bites of the pesto, with mozzarella, ricotta, fontina, and tomatoes. Both were good, and incredibly filling (I would not attempt to eat more than one slice in a sitting).
The’ve got a list of 8 topping combos available daily by the slice, half pie, or pie (including loads of veggie options and one vegan pie), as well as an ever-rotating specials menu: look for ingredients like eggplant, fresh rosemary, butternut squash, house-marinated baby artichoke hearts, cajun sausage, italian ham, toscano salami… and so on. They offer pies to go (including par-baked pies), and they also serve lasagna, veggie & meat calzones, roasted chicken, and a few types of salad. Wine and bottled beer is available.
The space itself has been totally gutted and redone, and it’s actually really pleasant: lots of blonde wood and understated artwork. Oh, and really super incredibly nice service.
I’m a sucker for a thin crust and minimal toppings, and as such would always choose Ken’s over this place for dinner, but this is definitely a great addition to the neighborhood, particularly for lunch.

I've eaten here a couple times now and love it. I've actually gotten cravings for and I'm generally, somewhat ambivalent about pizza.
God, I love my neighborhood.
I'm advertising Eat Pizza as the best place in NW. We tried it the other night for the first time. Our pizza was ready 10 minutes after we called in the order (fresh, not heat-lamp warm) and it was amazing. The best pizza in Portland. It's on the corner of the triangle with the Kingston (across from Hollywood Video on Burnside).
But Dove Vivi sounds like it might be worth a try. Farther away, though.
i work nearby and was so excited to see Kustom Pizza(i have the same c-k aversion) close. the service was so friendly and the vegan slice i got was really good. it was even better room temperature. i also had the black bean and broccoli salad to make it a combo. it was huge, just not as good as the pizza. i didn't really care for the large chunks of button mushrooms that were on the it.
I ate there this weekend but I did not listen to advice. I ate TWO slices. I was really hungry and very satisfied when done.
I've eaten at Dove Vi Vi twice (new restaurant/corner of 28th/Gleason) and was impressed with fresh toppings and especially the crust. Pizza can be so predictable, but the cornmeal crust was different and very good. I thought it tasted buttery, figured I was eating a zillion calories, but was told it was olive oil. Beet salad was huge and I love beets, so it made the top five of beet experiences. And then, because it was my birthday, the dessert of Zuccotto, mousse-like chocolate cake, was as good as anything I experienced in Italy. Kudos to Dove Vi Vi and what appears to be young, energetic entrepreneurs.

Yay! As someone who eats pizza pretty much every day, and yet has a very low bar for quality, Kustom and Rocco's were pretty much the only pizza places in town at which I just refused to eat. That place was just disgusting.
But now somewhere new to eat pizza! So exciting!
