Music I Miss Ryan Adams

It’s been years since this longtime Whiskeytown fan had anything nice to say about Ryan Adams. Everyone knows he’s a remarkable songwriter who seems to miss his mark with each and every new record he churns out. But there once was a time when my Adams obsession involved bootleg collecting, message board posting and my first—and only—foray into dressing like an artist I admired.

Deliberate bedhead hair and pearl snaps? What was I thinking?

Since he is in town this evening (it’s sold out, you aren’t going), here is a little trip back to the year 2000, where a young Adams made the best drunken mixtape jam of the past decade. I sort of miss him.

Me too.

I played pool with him before a Whiskeytown show in Salt Lake City in the mid 1990s. Incredible show, capped by the most spectacular version of "Dancing with the women at the bar" I've ever heard. Next show of theirs I saw (also in SLC) he got bombed to high heaven on about 25 Jaegermeister shots during the show, and played a 10 minute guitar feedback solo as the only encore. Great talent, but, woah!, talk about uneven live performances. You never know if Good Ryan or Bad Ryan is going to show up.

He's sober now, not that it did any good on this album.

Didn't a drunken Whiskeytown break-up on stage in SLC?

Drunken Whiskeytown, ok, that was a little redundant.

omg I was at that show too Dave

and yes, I happened to be thinking about how I miss liking RA just last week... but I haven't kept up with anything since the first solo album

You folks are a sad bunch. Geniuses do have their flaws. Good thing you weren't at the show Thursday night so that the rest of us could bear witness to a strong, tight, and sober performance by the best singer/songwriter in the country today. Go out and get Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights, and Easy Tiger - those ought to wake you up. Suz, if you don't like Easy Tiger, then you need to move on to another artist because what you "miss" is long gone (for the better).
