In case you haven’t kept abreast of the changes in the Laurelwood brewniverse (yeah I did!), here’s what I’ve gleaned from spying on other people’s blogs:
According to the Portland Beer Blog, the Laurelwood Pizza Co. opened last Saturday, in the space that the Laurelwood Pub & Brewery used to occupy, at 1728 NE 40th. Anybody know what style pizza they’re serving? The Pub & Brewery, meanwhile, moved up to new digs at 51st & Sandy a couple weeks ago. Good Stuff NW informs us that “owner Mike deKalb says the new place [at 51st & Sandy] has more separation between the bar and the kid-friendly areas, so we can hope for a bit of peace and quiet while we sip.”
This is smart. Very, very, smart. Lock the kids away behind a soundproof glass wall somewhere. I'm sure that once I start popping out babies, my appreciation for brewpubs will grow exponentially. As it stands, the presence of kids is enough to keep me out of most of them. It's not actually the kids, it's the parents who lose all interest in paying attention to their offspring as soon as they get a pint of beer in them. (Here's a thought: If you're going to ask a server to cater to the whims of your brat—to deal with picky eaters and special orders; to refill the condiments after every sugar packet has been removed and emptied, or shredded into tiny bits; to clean up the crackers that've been ground into the carpet; to bring crayons and what the fuck all else, not to mention to navigate a crowded room with a tray full of glasses while dodging unattended little bodies hurtling themselves around at knee-level—at least tip them as well as you'd pay your baby sitter for an hour of their time. Better yet, bring your own goddamn crayons, and keep your kids out of everyone else's hair.)
Residual server rage just comes out of nowhere sometimes. Does it ever go away?
Anyway, new Laurelwoods. Check 'em out. Report back.
divebar wife, i think one of the comments on your post raises an interesting question: once smoking is banned, what's to keep kids out of places like the Horsebrass? isn't the only reason kids can't go there now is that you can smoke inside?
Nope. The OLCC keeps kids out of most bars.
Yeah, but i thought the definition of a bar had to do with how much food they serve. The Horsebrass serves a full menu, so presumably the only reason kids can't hang is because of the smoking... am i wrong?
Yeah - that was my thought too - but I honestly don't know....
Went to Laurelwood Pizza last night. I guess the word hasn't fully gotten out yet, or people are busy checking out the new location instead. Not much of a crowd, but there were a good number of energetic kids around. Beer's the same as always (the new Workhorse IPA kicks ass), but pizza's a few bucks too expensive for the quality. Just a 12-inch will run you from $12-16, and some of the calzones are above $10. Worth a try, but beware of sticker shock.

I walked into a conversation that two co-workers of mine were having about going there and having some random 3-year-old poking them in the back through their chair until the parents several tables away finally harangued the kid back to their own table.
So I don't know that I believe the 'more separation' line.
And that was before they read my post on it.
