Politics “Love” Vs. Portland—Advantage Portland

Posted by Scott Moore on Fri, Jul 6 at 6:15 PM

Hey progressive-thinking, tolerant, live-and-let-live Portland, you think you’re safe from the sinewy, homophobic tendrils of Focus on the Family, all tucked safely way in parts of the country you’d never dream of visiting?

Think again, hippy.

Love Won Out,” Focus on the Family’s ironically named crusade to force gays and lesbians back into the closet, is coming to town on August 4th. The place: City Bible Church (9200 NE Fremont).

I’ve written before about why ex-gay movements are dangerous—in addition to not actually working—and you should also check out what one veteran of numerous ex-gay programs, Peterson Toscano, has to say here. Conservative Christians have an intellectual need to believe firmly that homosexuality is unnatural and “curable”—if they accepted the overwhelming evidence that same-sex orientation isn’t something that can be “fixed,” they’d have to acknowledge that it’s not a choice, and the resulting levels of cognitive dissonance could very well shake their faith—and their world view—to its core.

But by maintaining that gays and lesbians can turn straight if they just pray and believe hard enough—and by trotting out a few poor souls every once in a while to “prove it”—they can continue pushing for laws that treat homosexuals as aberrant. In other words, there’s a very clear line from ex-gay organizations to on-the-street policies that have very real negative impacts on the Queer community.

If you want a peep at what I’m talking about, take a gander at the session descriptions on the “Love Won Out” website.

Reality, of course, isn’t kind to the ex-gay belief, especially in the face of stories like the one where two of the founders of Exodus—one of the oldest, largest ex-gay organizations—left the group to go live in very, very gay sin. And then there’s Pastor Ted Haggard; if he couldn’t pray his way out of a life of clandestine BJs and handsies from male escorts, it’s hard to believe that tactic can work for anyone.

I suppose the only question, then, is who is going to organize the protest? August 4th, City Bible Church.

On a related note, I just had the most unexpectedly odd exchange with a phone operator at Focus on the Family. I was calling to find out the location of the conference, and as the phone was ringing, I realized that it was on the website right in front of me. I explained to the operator that I’d answered my own question, but then she asked, “Have you signed up for Dr. Dobson’s columns or our complimentary Focus on the Family newsletters?”

“Well, no, I haven’t,” I replied.

“See, God did have a reason for you to call,” she exclaimed.

“He did?” I asked. Before I knew it, I had—piece by piece—given her all of my contact information and signed up for at least one newsletter. I had my choice of their general newsletter, or one for families, or one for working singles, or one for…I don’t really remember. I chose the general one.

It was the first time I’ve ever been upsold on something free.

After having probably signed my life away to James Dobson, I started trying to get off the phone. Before hanging up, the operator said, “Have a blessed evening!”

Except that she pronounced “blessed” as “blesst,” not “bless-ed.” That seemed weird.

"I suppose the only question, then, is who is going to organize the protest?"

Well, I would. But seriously, when was the last time the gay community ever did anything for me?

I think it would be way more fun to have a couple fall in love in the "Hope for Those Who Struggle" break out -- I mean make out -- session. How much is registration?

Hope for Those Who Struggle

Choosing to leave homosexuality is a difficult process. However, tens of thousands of men and women have successfully done just that. This breakout session is specifically for those battling unwanted same-sex attractions who are looking for practical tools and resources, a place to ask questions and some encouragement while on the journey.

I spent age 8-22 as an evangelical christian... i was even somewhat liberal about it once i got to highschool. i took the more 'understanding/conversational/ sin is sin its all equal' approach rather than the 'fire and brimstone/ shove docturine down your throat/ you are going to hell approach'. but still my convictions were cemented in the Bible being absolute truth.... i have been to billy graham crusades, on mission trips and attended countless 'revivals' that use james dobson materials. I can tell you a protest is not going to even phase the christians that are attending or supportive of this event. they will simply pity you, feel sorry that you are so lost and pray that the devil's influence be removed so God can show you the Truth and blah blah blah blah... MY POINT: protest all you want, it is good for the community to know whats happening there, but if you want to make any real impact or actually thwart the idealogy of this 'event' REGISTER. show up and go. SPEAK UP and argue with the 'logic' they use. Use your personal experience as an example because that can not be denied. of course it is like slamming your head into a brick wall and you may not change anyones minds, but at the very least you turned it into a dialouge or debate or argument. If enough time can be wasted that way, they they don't get to preach their bullshit.... just sayin.

You seem to be having a problem with repeats this evening. And: 'docturine' is either one of the funniest typoes I've seen in a long time, or was entirely intentional, in its characterization of doctrine.

What do I always say when I'm up against these awful, evil fucks? "That's my friends you're talking about, and that's my family you're talking about. You Do Not Fuck With My Friends, and You Do Not Fuck With My Family."
Bigots, deep down, still fall for that insularity/blind loyalty even more than Belief. These are not sharp minds we're discussing here.

They are well funded, though.

It's odd that the operator pressured you into getting the Focus On The Family newsletter. What does a right-wing newsletter/solicitation have to do with helping you with your or your loved one's gay tendencies?

It's also odd that the infamous Love Won Out's billboard (pics on that other free weekly's blog) doesn't mention Focus On The Family at all. Apparently they recognize that a right-wing group isn't really a selling point in Portland.

Sadly, I don't see Portland's own notorious ex-gay John Paulk on Love Won Out program. Paulk worked for FOTF, led their Love Won Out conference, and was a board member of the national ex-gay ministry Exodus. In 2000, Paulk was caught at DC gay bar. Plagued by the scandal, he eventually left the ex-gay industry and started a catering company here in town.

Last weekend, there were dualing ex-gay and ex-exgay conferences. The ex-exgay Survivors Conference featured a public apology by three former ex-gay ministry leaders who now regret the harm the ex-gay message has caused.

You're tainted! I must lay hands upon you to cleanse you of this evil.

In regards to getting the FoF newsletter-being upsold for free-they certainly don't think you got something for nothing.

They think they may have saved your soul. Short of that prayer every televangelist begs you to do with them at the end of each show they do, they'll take that as the next best thing.

And you are on their mailing list now...good luck getting off that one after the mailings stop being amusing.

And if anyone hasn't made the acquaintance of the blog of a group of highly irreverent (and funny as hell) ex-City Bible Churchers, http://citybusinesschurch.org, you should. Fun, fun reading for the unchurched, the heathen, and the disillusioned.

Yeah, that guy's not gay...
