No, it really is. Let’s all just take a moment and think about French fries.
My most special French fry memory is: I grew up in the ‘burbs and when I was sixteen the coolest thing ever was to skip school and go to Dot’s for cheese fries. I had to follow a map drawn on a napkin to get there (1-5 to the Ross island bridge, up Powell, left at the Burgerville.) since at that point this city still seemed big. My friend Stephanie and I whiled away many a school day over cheese fries and (virgin) raspberry lime rickeys.
Now that I am a grownup (ish) I am very partial to the bizarrely addictive salt-and-pepper fries at the Bonfire, though I have a feeling that ten years down the road I am going to associate those fries with a period in my twenties during which I made a lot of poor decisions.
Anyone? Fries?
i remember (one of) the coolest things to do in high school was to congregate at the Denny's and drink coffee and eat fries in groups of like 15.
well, everyone ate fries. if you were really really cool, you drank coffee too.
I used to work from McMenamins and everytime I heard someone say, "they have the BEST FRIES here," I think I died a little inside.
work for, that is.
The frozen crinkle-cut God-knows-what brand of fries my grandfather used to make at his restuarant will never be topped in my memory. Probably because it was the same oil he used to fry his shrimp, wontons and pot stickers in. Not bad for a Chinese restaurant.
Thanks, Alison. I needed a reason to go to the club and get some. These are delicious...
Fries sound really good. Who makes the best fries in town? Everett St. Bistro?
mmmmmm.....french fries.....
As a kid, McDonalds, not so much. But five stars for Bob's Drive-In fries in Eugene, and also at the A&W stand.
better yet, does anywhere in town serve poutine?
The hurricane garlic curly fries at Salvador Molly's are very good.
The Alberta street Bar and Grill turns out a pretty good fry. I hear Cafe Castagna does too, though I've never had them.
I had never heard of poutine before but I just Wikipedia'd it, and... I kind of want to marry it. I can't remember seeing it on a menu here, though.
i love Bonfire fries. i sometimes go there and plan eating something else, like tofu tacos b/c i heard they were good, but all i can ever order is a boca burger and fries...so yum...
Oh man, I hadn't even seen these comments before I got all poutine crazy with my blog post above. Great minds think...French Canadian?
Yeah, I got quite the poutine craving after last night and got the $5 fry basket delivered from Oliver Twisted. I couldn't figure out how to make gravy and I didn't have any cheese curds so I used an au jus packet and the cheese packet from a box of annie's mac and cheese. Not even close.
Holy crap, Martin. That sounds disgusting.
The fries at Pause are good, especially with the (veggie) sliders. Mmmmm. Thick, with the peel on, and coarse salt.
Best fries in Portland...Castagna, on SE Hawthonre and, oh, 19th or so. In the bistro annex.
They honor them right. Cook 'em twice. And you get home-made ketchup to dip 'em in. Great burgers too...

I remember 10 years ago when I thought McMennamin's fries were all that. And yes, I look back at that era and realize the error of my ways.
