Music The Lips Are Coming!

Posted by Ezra Caraeff on Tue, Jul 3 at 10:36 AM

Ok, so the last couple albums from the Flaming Lips have not been all that great, but they are still (arguably) our generation’s greatest live band, and now they are coming back to Portland…

September 19th at the Roseland Theater

No word on when tickets go on sale, but once they do, they won’t last long. Before you start camping out on the bus mall next to Roseland, peep this trailer for U.F.O.’s at the Zoo, the new DVD from the band which is due out on July 24th.

The Flaming Lips played the single greatest concert I've ever seen, and my mind would be blown if any band ever knocked them off that top spot. But I think that that shark was jumped a long time ago. I hope I'm wrong, but they've seemed like a wayward parody of themselves for the past few years. (However, if the reviews of the new concerts are good, I'll totally be there.)

Oh, don't be such a hipster.

Just kidding. But curious, what year was the "single greatest concert" in question.

Please never refer to them as "The Lips" ever again...

The show I was referring to was a secret show at a tiny sportsbar half an hour outside of Houston in Spring of 2000, right after the Soft Bulletin. Quiet Riot was playing the following weekend. There were MAYBE 150 people there, and the band pulled out all the stops that we are now familiar with (fake blood, confetti, headphones, mic cams, plushies, etc. etc. etc.), but neither I nor my friends had any idea to expect that it was going to be anything other than a normal, staid indierock show. To say we were blown away is an enormous understatement.
