I like most of the work of J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, Mission: Impossible III), so the whole Cloverfield phenomenon is proving to be pretty interesting.
Long story short: If you saw a certain giant summer blockbuster about alien robots who, say, transform into vehicles, you also saw a trailer for an untitled film, currently codenamed Cloverfield. The footage is all handheld, all Blair Witch style, but it has the feel of a big-budget monster movie. Not much is revealed in the trailer, but its tone and execution are fucking great.
You can check it out here.

Since the trailer debuted, AICN has weighed in, Wikipedia has a page for the film, Dark Horizons and Cinematical have a few tidbits, USA Today and Forbes have stories, there’s an annoyingly cryptic site related to the movie (here—and reaction to it here), and nerds around the globe are doing their damnedest to figure out what the fuck Cloverfield is all about. Usually this sort of mysterious/viral advertising shtick annoys the hell out of me, but considering this project is Abrams-related—and that the studio is clearly really confident in it—I’m actually pretty intrigued. Anybody else have any thoughts?
Sans Soleil, I just updated the post, since Paramount's apparently decided (now that Transformers' opening weekend is over) to let people watch the Cloverfield trailer online. The link to the trailer is in the post. Thanks to AICN for the heads up.
The only thing that kind of sucked about this trailer was the fact that it followed that Will Smith end-of-the-world one, and when it started I just sort of thought "Oh, great, another one". But watching it independently now makes me more excited, and I do love me some J.J. Abrams.
I wonder if it'll lead to an increase in book sales for Cloverfield Press, which is the second listing when you google "cloverfield."
I kinda preferred the shaky, camcordered bootleg trailer. The samizdat flavor furthered the mystery--probably a Paramount youtube plant, no?
This still looks awesome, but the director's only previous film is The Pallbearer, the seminal Schwimmer-Paltrow vehicle of 1996.
I'm sure my excitement will wane as 1-18-08 approaches. C'est la vie.
The Ethan Haas stuff isn't connected to Cloverfield. That was a rumor that got transformed into statement, whichout ever being sourced.

Promotional stunts like this are obnoxious...BUT...I am totally, irrationally, nerdily excited by the trailer and for the movie. It's as much an advertisement for Transformers as for Cloverfield (or whatever it's really called), because now I will make it a point to see that ricockulous robot movie in theaters.
