Food Cupcake Smackdown!

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Fri, Aug 24 at 7:51 AM

Both of Portland’s cupcake bakeries are floundering in our new reader restaurant reviews. Cupcake Jones has one review—but it’s a sad 1-star review. Saint Cupcake has two readers weighing in, but both gave it only one star.

Are Portland’s cupcakes that awful? Or are these three readers wildly off? Weigh in on those reviews, so we can make a more accurate assessment.

From Cupcake Jones’ current review:

I have tried Cupcake Jones twice now and both times my jones was left unfulfilled.

And the current word on Saint Cupcake:

The Lemon Cupcake tasted like salt and flour. The flat icing had the only flavor. Their choclate cake tastes ok but like it came from a box. It also had two large egg shells at the bottom. I’d avoid this place.

sweet pea makes the good cupcakes
sells em at new seasons and I don't know where else
and vegan at that

Bakery Bar (SE Portland) makes really great cupcakes too.

I'm sure the actual product at all of these places is fine. What's awful is the ongoing trend of cute food.

Or the larger thing Portland often does of trying to slide by on charm, then utterly failing to charm.

yeah, sweetpea is the only consistently good cupcake in town.
apparently they're supposed to be opening up a retail space in the near future.
as of right now, i usually just get my fix at the co-op.

Shit. What's the name of that bakery on NE Broadway, kind of near the Lloyd Center? It's like a woman's name?

Anyway. Good cupcakes.

Helen Burnhard Bakery. They have been around forever and are consistently good. My family has been getting their wedding cakes there since the fifties. Pink Champagne with Apricot Mousse is my favorite.

I get my cupcakes at The Parkside Deli on 61st and Belmont. I ordered a bunch for a work party the other day and everyone loved them.
They also have homemade ice cream sandwiches and some other killer deserts.

Haven't tried Cupcake Jones yet, but I really like St. Cupcake. I have to be in the mood for cupcakes and that usually happens for me in the depths of winter when I crave carbs and lots of sleep.

My favs there are the Red Velvet, Big Top, and the one with coconut icing (can't remember its name). I will have to try the other places in the previous posts.

Try the chocolate/peanut butter cupcake at Cupcake Jones. It's the only one I really love, but it's lightyears beyond any other cupcake I've ever had.

Saint Cupcake's a'ight, but it hurts to pay $3 for a mediocre cupcake. We splurged on our anniversary, though, and bought some.

Tru dat Hula.

Black Sheep Bakery's chocolate cupcake/muffin is seriously kick-ass and vegan too!

I really hate Sippenkrantz not just for their shitty cupcakes but for the shitty kids that frequent the place.

As a cupcake fan (I HAVE ONE TATTOOED ON MY ASS), I would have to say that there are some slim pickins for good cupcakes in town.

I work at a place known for their desserts, and last week they made a few batches of the classic cakes into cupcakes for a wedding or something like that. They were good. Also, Piece of Cake (in sellwood, off milwaukie and tacoma?) sometimes has cupcakes in their "award winning" chantilly cake and carrot, etc.. Some of their stuff is vegan, too.

As for Saint Cupcake and Cupcake Jones, I may agree with the current one star reviews, but with a baking business (or restaurant, for that matter), it can always get better, and usually does, with more experience. Hopefully they'll read this rag and change some things, maybe even raise prices to reflect better ingredients and work.

By the way, if anyone wants a cupcake consultant, I'd be more than happy.

While my roommate has a daily jones for St. Cupcake, I gotta go with Bakery Bar. Had em for the first time yesterday, and the icing is nice and light - almost like a whipped cream. Delicious, and the best I've had in town. Except for those made by my friend Ebeth.
