News Good Morning, News!

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Mon, Aug 20 at 7:36 AM

Elvira Arellano spent a year in an Illinois church to avoid deportation and separation from her 8-year-old son. On Sunday, she was arrested in L.A., where she’d arrived “after leaving her sanctuary to campaign for immigration reform.”

Two NYC Firefighters died on Saturday, fighting a fire at a building damaged on 9/11 that was just now being dismantled.

Here comes Hurricane Dean!

“A 23-year old Serb was found dead and half-eaten in the bear cage of Belgrade Zoo at the weekend during the annual beer festival,” CNN reports. “‘There’s a good chance he was drunk or drugged. Only an idiot would jump into the bear cage,’ zoo director Vuk Bojovic told Reuters.”

Portland’s drivers drive less, save $2.6 billion a year, and “most of that money, which otherwise would go to far-flung car makers and oil companies, appears to go instead to housing, entertainment and food in the Portland-area economy.” Yay us!

Portland homes are “now the least affordable” since the Regional Multiple Listing Service started tracking sales over a decade ago.

Do you see a correlation between your last two entries in this post?

I do.

The UGB giveth. And the UGB taketh away.

You should come to Debate Club tomorrow night—I think that tension is going to be a large part of our conversation on gentrification and displacement.

I'll try to make it. Isn't it down on East Burnside?

Yep, at 6th. romtoms' signage is rather lacking, but it's right on the corner, and there's a guy-wearing-a-jet-pack logo painted above the door.
