Food Mark Lindsay’s Rock & Roll Cafe

Despite the fact that I will generally go just about anywhere if I’m promised free food/ drinks, on Saturday I skipped the private opening party for “Portland’s first and only celebrity restaurant,” Mark Lindsay’s Rock and Roll Café, which opens to the public tonight at 4 pm (Mark Lindsay, of course, was the lead singer for Paul Revere and the Raiders.)

“Whether you visit us to savor the Yaw’s Top Notch Menu, or sample something “edgier” from our Rock Star Menu, each experience will be laden with cultural and culinary adventures for all.”

Experiences like:
Yellow Submarines … … … .
Fish tacos with guacamole, pico de gallo & a cilantro cream 11.95

Funky Chicken … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …
Buttermilk fried chicken breast over mashed potatoes.
Topped with cheddar cheese, roasted corn, & our hearty country gravy. 12.95

Everybody Gets the Bleus… …
Mixed sweet greens tossed in our Rogue River Valley Blue Cheese Dressing Topped with strawberries, proscuito ham, and hazelnuts Served with our warm blue cheese corn bread
8.95

Frankly, the whole thing makes me a little sad. I think the website pretty much speaks for itself—all I want to know is, who is this place for? I mean… a rock & roll cafe on Sandy? What?

A. Bourdain's "kitchen confidential" outlines the reasons NOT to start a restaurant. One of them is to "share your collection of ... memorabilia."

i'm totally down for potato skins tho

The Funky Chicken sounds suspiciously close to a KFC famous bowl.

Alison-
Please go in and order "Gerry's Frank" C'mon, PLEASE!

I keep reading about this place and all I keep thinking is who the fuck is Paul Revere and the Raiders? Does anyone know? Anyone?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Revere_And_The_Raiders

"Cherokee people, Cherokee tri-ibe/So proud to live, so proud to die."

Paul Revere and the Raiders are responsible for one of my favorite songs ever, "Indian Reservation." It's a great, albeit dated, look at the plight of the Cherokee tribes. Plus it's way better than anything from Robby Bee & the Boyz From the Rez (You Tube 'em!).

But as much as I love that tune, you couldn't pay me to eat a "Funky Chicken."

I live in Hollywood and pass by that location on the bus every day. Who is it for? Well, all I know is that everyone -- and I mean EVERYONE -- I've seen in that place is over 50. It's nothing but gray hair, fanny packs, and those plastic sunglasses that go over your regular glasses.

So yeah. It's a "rock n' roll" cafe for people who stopped listening to rock n' roll 40 years ago.

Pile my food in a fucking bowl, Mark Lindsay.

I like how the salads are called "ballads."

Lame theme restaurants aside, Paul Revere & The Raiders deserve respect. Seriously, people: "Just Like Me"? "Kicks"? "Him or Me What's it gonna be"? "Good Thing"? Damn.
Skip the food, sure, but this is some real-deal PacNW history right here. Anyway, would you rather have a Hard Rock Cafe?

Damn straight, Rock Lobster.
It's not too far of a leap from Paul Revere and the Raiders to Fred Cole's early garage stuff like The Dogs and Lollipop Shop.

I love Paul Revere and The Raiders.

Wow, okay so I read the Wiki and YouTubed 'em, like suggested, and now I'm more disturbed than ever. My eyes! My eyes!

oh c'mon! An Indian reservation casino endorsement is a shining recommendation for opening a rock-themed restaurant!

On a related note, that Cherokee Nation youtube was horrifying.

The place is basically a dedication to Yaw's that used to be like Al's in Happy Days back in the fifties. That would explain all the grey-haired people willing to cough up $12.95 for a glamorized version of KFC.

I work there and what you have been saying isn't fair at all. Have you been in the place? Have you eaten food OTHER than the chicken. It has one of the best atmospheres for a restaurant in portland - vintage stuff everywhere. The food is terrific and there are more than just old people going to eat here. It's a great place. Go check it out

Paul Revere and the Raiders were a very great garage band from the 1960s...yeah, they had that stupid Cherokee people song, but pick up any of their albums from the mid to late sixties and they are awesome.

Who the fuck are you? NOBODY!!!!! NOBODY!!!!!!

Your mama. You inbread stupid fuck!!!!

Dear Mark. I wish I had the money to take a plane ride to see your cafe but I don,t so I wish you all the happy and good things for you. You, Paul, and the rest of the Raiders helped me through a hard time in my teen years. THANK YOU I don,t care what other people say to put you down. You will always be the best band

If you don't like the place then stay out, more room for those of us who would like to go there. Shhhhhheeeeesss, who are the Raiders? Just the greatest rock band ever to come from Portland. Bet you never heard of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, or Spinal Tap either. Crawl back into your hole emo.

I got to eat there for free as part of the ramp-up to the opening, because my girlfriend works there and the employees all took turns as guinea pigs for a test run.

The food is good, and the music stuff on the walls interesting.

And if you don't know who Paul Revere and the Raiders are...well, I guess some people don't care about music history.

Most music based on the roots of original rock & roll ended sometime in the mid to late '60s. Paul Revere and the Raiders were part of the last era of that real rock & roll music period. They were great and started local. Anyone younger than about 45 probably won't know about or appreciate the significance of their contribution. If you do, check out the restaurant and the memorabilia - including the Yaw's fries and gravy.

Yeah, I ate there the other night and the atmosphere was more like Red Robin on a really busy night, but with worse food and terrible service. I actually ate the Everybody Gets the bleus salad and I woke up in the middle of the night with a very sick stomach. And I will not eat Gerry's Frank. Ever.

WERE THE FRENCH FRIES 'FRESH CUT'? WILL NOT ORDER THEM WITH GRAVY IF THEY ARE NOT...SURE HOPE THEY ARE...I'LL HAVE TO CHECK OUT THE HAMBURGERS AND THEN I WILL TELL YOU WHAT I REALLY THINK.

Mark: Congratulations on your new business. Those of us players over 50 salute you! I will be sure to stop in and give your place a try.

Remember in business, as in music, those who can't do it, BECOME CRITICS!

Best always:
Tony

I went there with my folks, who remembered Paul Revere and the Raiders from their high school days. We had a good time, and the food was at least as good, if not better, than other hamburger places in town. Not the best ever, but good. Nobody in my family got sick. Reading what has been written here, it sounds like there are a bunch of people writing comments whose lives suck, and who get to feel better about themselves by putting down anybody with gray hair. Grow up, people, and I mean that literally and emotionally. It's ridiculous that I have to say it, but someday you'll grow a few gray hairs, and let's hope there aren't a lot of young idiots running around basically believing you should be killed to make more room for the "cool" assholes who get pleasure out of demeaning others simply on the basis of their age. Hope I haven't used too many big words...people who put down others based on age, sexuality, races, etc. typically are boorish and undereducated...

I will never eat there. Three of us went and ordered 5 different things, chicken wings, ribs, taco's, fajitas and salad rolls (which they were out of). The chicken wings reminded me of KFC with that sauce, fajitas had more onions then chicken, the ribs were dry, taco's were ok, I will never know abut the salad rolls. The prices are too high for the food they serve. I was disappointed in the menu,in both the food items and trying to read the menu which was so light & small print you could barely read it. I will not recommend the place.

Just ate there tonight. I didn't live here when Yaw's was in business but I've been hearing people rave about their food for 20 years. I'm sorry, but that was one bad hamburger - small, dry and burnt-tasting. The fries were OK. The restaurant itself was nice, the waitstaff were great. Maybe we'll go back and try something else, but i'm not in any hurry. And I'm almost fifty and I wouldn't be caught dead with a fanny pack!
