Artsy Miranda July Named in Jeremy Blake/Theresa Duncan Suicide Case

A weird story just keeps getting weirder:

The artworld is still in shock over the double suicide of video artist Jeremy Blake and his girlfriend, game designer and screenwriter Theresa Duncan last month. Blake was an incredible artist whose work bled into pop culture when he created those dreamy colorscapes in Punchdrunk Love and the similar effect on the cover of Beck’s CD Sea Change. Duncan authored the extremely popular blog Wit of the Staircase and was being hyped as the “female Michel Gondry,” thanks to her screenplay, Alice Underground.

On July 10, Blake went home to discover that Duncan had killed herself (pills, alcohol, and a suicide note were found nearby). One week later, Blake swam out to sea at New York’s Rockaway Beach; five days later, his body washed up in New Jersey.

This morning, the LA Times has a fascinating story that chronicles the couple’s detachment from reality. One tidbit from the story really jumped out:

Blake and Duncan were sure people were conspiring against them — in particular, the Church of Scientology.

In a 27-page “chronology” written by Blake in October in preparation for a lawsuit against the church that was never filed, he alleges the couple was “methodically defamed, harassed, followed and threatened” by Scientologists. The document lists Tom Cruise, filmmaker-artist-author Miranda July, writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson, former Viacom Chief Executive Tom Freston, alternative rocker Beck and Art Forum Editor Tim Griffin, among others, as players in the dispute. In addition, a number of Hollywood talent agents and major league art collectors were accused of being in on the conspiracy…

Also in the chronology, Miranda July is accused of spreading unspecified defamation about Duncan in New York and is identified as a “Scientologist filmmaker” even though she is not affiliated with the church. July declined to comment. And a spokeswoman for the Church of Scientology, Karin Pouw, called the conspiracy allegations “bizarre.”

It’s clear that Blake’s accusation is baseless; the article also writes, “In the spring of 2006, according to the chronology, Blake and Duncan began documenting cars with Florida license plates and graffiti (some allegedly resembling Duncan’s signature) in their neighborhood as more evidence of the conspiracy. Around this time, Blake tossed urine onto the barbecue of neighbors who the couple suspected were Scientologists.”

July could not be reached for comment; she is too busy working on the screenplay for Me, You, Emperor Klaxatu, and Everyone We Know.

Comments

Man, what is it about Miranda July, the Church of Scientology, or any combination thereof, which rends the fabric of space and time in either's local vicinity.

Wuh-eerd.

According to a comment over at Huffington Post recently, Miranda July aka Grossinger is close friends with scientologist Beck and attended a scientology based school in Portland together. That would be the Delphian School http://theschool.com/index.html

In answer to Nick Antosca's query, Miranda July, like her sometime friend singer Beck Hansen, is also a second generation Scientologist.

Her parents' "publishing company" is a hippy dippy mishmash of titles reflecting his sect's interest in Martians and ghosts and Thetans and pseudo-Buddhist claptrap. (See link below.)

So Miranda July (nee Miranda Grossinger, schooled in Scientological ways in this cult's largest "alternative" school in Portland) also has the Church of Scientology's huge money and promotional appartus behind her.

She hides the association with this cult when it seems un-bohemian to be associated with them, and then accepts their aggro publicist and Hollywood force behind the scenes when promoting herself and her wan artistic emanations....."

I suspect that this is why there was 'no comment' from Ms July. Being a Portland publication, I can't understand why you did not know this already.

Excuse me, wingnut—Miranda July didn't live in Portland until after college. That school you posted is for kids. You have no idea what you're talking about. And as far as the "aggro publicist" behind her—surely you're talking about the countless local supporters that MJ cultivated over the years, who helped edit her early films and booked her for local gigs and traveled with her on tour, selling merch and setting up her gear? You're a real jackass.

On the death of Theresa Duncan and coverage by Ruppert Murdoch:

I don't know if Beck is friends with Miranda July (I haven't ever heard that he is), but I know that he didn't attend school in Portland. He went to school in L.A. until he dropped out after ninth grade.

I also can't find any evidence that July's parents are Scientologists. Their company publishes books on a wide variety of subjects, including psychology, which seems incompatible with the Scientology mindset. And, not that this proves anything, but their names don't show up on known lists of people who have donated money to the CoS, gone clear, or taken courses. I think the Huffington Post commenter, Bill Ford, is jumping to conclusions in a major way.

What they were going though and experiencing is something that many of us online are calling gang stalking.

Gang stalking is a psychological attack that can completely destroy a persons life, while leaving little or no evidence to incriminate the perpetrators.

Goals of Gang Stalking

The goal is to isolate the target from all forms of support, so that the target can be set up in the future for arrest, institutionalisation, or forced suicide. Other goals of this harassment is to destroy the targets reputation and credibility. Make the target look crazy or unstable.

Other goals involve sensitizing the target to every day stimuli's as a form of control, which is used to control targets when they get out of line.

These people also want to make the targets of this harassment vulnerable, they want to make them destitute. The secondary goals seem to be to make the target homeless, jobless, give them a breakdown, and the primary goals seems to be to drive the target to forced suicide, just like what they did with some of the targets of Cointelpro.

Who gets targeted

Targeting can happen to anyone, but it's being widely used on minorities, outspoken individuals, whistle blowers, dissidents, people who go up against large wealthy corporations, woman's groups, (single) women, anti-war proponents, and other innocent individuals. The majority of the targets are not aware this is happening to them and it continues for years. Even when a target moves, changes jobs, the harassment still continues.

The more I learn the more I believe that these two were targets, and the end result is all too common. The only question I have now is was it really suicide or just made to look like a suicide.
