Portland The Portland Mercury Does Jury Duty!

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Thu, Aug 23 at 7:59 AM

Well, two of us are doing jury duty. In a weird coincidence, Music Editor Ezra Caraeff and I were both summoned to the Multnomah County Courthouse to be on a jury of our peers (or, more accurately, to sit in a room that resembles an airport gate lounge until our name is called).

Ezra’s ancient computer can’t get wifi, so he’s screwed. But I can show you a picture of our juror badges (and check out the guy reading the Mercury, sitting in front of us! Yep, he’s reading the news section.)

Oooh...those ladies are gonna be pissed when they find you've leaked your juror number! But be sure to check out the books in the back - when I was there a couple months ago there were some pretty entertaining finds.

Looks like he's reading my story. Nice.

I was supposed to be in that jury duty pool too! Now I wish I hadn't bailed (get it!) on my civic duty.

And we all got out by 10! And watched some bizarre Leslie Nielson flick on Comedy Central, followed by the Daily Show. Not a bad morning, really.

If you're not into jury then getting called up on a Thursday is a bonus, not too much stuff goes out to trial on Thursdays, hence not too much demand for jurors. However, had you been called up earlier in the week, you could have sat in on the Attempted Agg Murder trial of the guy who shot at a cop over by Trader Joe's earlier this year, or a civil case where the owner of a bar on Hawthorne is being sued.
Sometimes it beats daytime TV, sometimes it don't.
