You’ve all probably heard that the Virginia Cafe is scheduled to close because the building is being converted to condos. Well, word on the street is that the VC isn’t shutting its doors for good—rumor has it that they’re moving to the old Willamette Week space, across from the central library. They leave their current location february 28th and are hoping to open in the new spot immediately thereafter.

Bah.

Another one bites the dust. Like the Hungry Tiger and many others who have tried, you can't recreate that magic. You can only relocate and charge more money for food.

Well, the fratboys have less blocks to walk now. That's a public service. Thanks, Tom Moyer!

They've already moved at least once before. Why is this so much more terrible (besides the fact that the space isn't as nice)?

Bitch, bitch, bitch.

Thank god someone is moving into that space across from the library.

It's too bad, the location had a particular personality that would be hard to recreate -a smoke machine might help though. Hopefully they'll be able to exorcise WW taint and maybe save those awesome wooden booths.

Actually, the current Virginia Cafe was tainted by a strong WW presence already. The paper's music meetings were held in the wonderful back booth every Monday, where we would all be treated to the warm welcome of Peggy or Monty. And I spent many an afternoon writing in one of those lovely old wooden booths when I had to get out of the office for a bit. And then I would return to WW central, bringing the taint of the VC with me, which smelled a lot like stale cigarette smoke and whiskey. That old spot will be missed, but the new spot seems fitting (to me at least).

Hopefully they'll be able to exorcise Mark Baumgarten's taint and maybe save those awesome wooden booths.
